Interestingly, and I think importantly, we have forgotten 9/10/01

And what it was like to live in what was in many ways a different, much freer country.

Some of you were too young. I’m not sure the rest of us can do justice to the multiple ways things were different then.

I would like to see a documentary comparing life on 9/10/01 to life in 9/10/21.

W was such an idiot. All we needed to do was make more secure cockpit doors. Instead he created an army of government workers and streamlined the government's ability to spy on citizens.

"The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth. He is not actually happy when free; he is uncomfortable, a bit alarmed, and intolerably lonely. Liberty is not a thing for the great masses of men. It is the exclusive possession of a small and disreputable minority, like knowledge, courage and honor. It takes a special sort of man to understand and enjoy liberty — and he is usually an outlaw in democratic societies."

Unfortunately, we are unlikely to ever return to life before mass acceptance of civil liberty violations and security theater, all in the name of safety.

We have become overly risk averse. Simple as that. Afraid to let humans be humans, scared of everything, nothing to really look forward to. Cheap trinkets, food and entertainment and you can buy off any American.

Our government did a masterful job destroying the American psyche in a couple of decades. Too many people packed into too tight of spaces, no loyalty, too much guilt, all in a superficial, materialistic world.

Republics are just not designed for long term. They only work when a huge portion of people are able to handle their every day lives with limited interference, and unfortunately we haven't been there for a while. 9/11 pushed a lot of the non-big government conservatives into big government to deter terrorism. Once the politicians figured out they could just say terrorism to get the largest group of spending hold outs to enjoy large government, it was effectively over.

I’m embarrassed at the amount of tyranny dressed as patriotism I swallowed in the years after that.

Yep, just more government incompetence.

Their surveillance program allowed the hijackers to do what they did, so the government decides to fix it by making it harder for American citizens, and spying on them.

The Patriot Act was a disgrace. They always give their shitty bills such nice sounding names.

9/11 should have been a wake-up call to this country. Every Islamic radical group we've fought in the last 20 years (Al Qaeda, Taliban and ISIS) was either created by or assisted by our intelligence services, namely the CIA. Instead of publicly executing those in our government responsible for this, we gave these people near unlimited powers in the weeks, months and years that followed. Instead of stopping our meddling in the affairs of other countries and minding our own damn business, we have continued to seek out conflicts in which to intervene. We have learned nothing.

One thing Trump was dead on regarding, was the deep state.

That's undeniable. And it's pure evil.

The two things I remember most vividly about life before 9/11 was the fact that I could go inside my dad's building to visit him at work (he worked for the FAA) and the fact that I could go past security and to the gate to say good-bye to family members when they left to get on a flight.

I personally live the life that I want to live.
I mean flying commercial sucks now and covid restrictions have been depressing but I feel like I’m having a pretty good ride and don’t feel like government overreach has greatly affected my quality of life.
But I may be a bit of an outlaw in democratic society.
If the government is monitoring me in metadata collection I struggle to know what in the hell they would be interested in with my life.
My personal data is likely worth more to corporate interests after my money than the government.
I fish, spend a lot of time outdoors, and a lot of time w my family. Maybe I’m missing it but don’t feel greatly affected by big brothers influence.
We still live in one of the most free societies in history and if you see a rule that needs to be bent a little I say go for it.
I’m not saying there should be no concern for government overreach particularly w the current administration, I’m just saying don’t let it ruin all the fun to be had in modern times.

Nope. Even freedom indexes list the USA in the middle or slightly better.

We are one of the most regulated Western countries.

Apparently every freedom we give up is in the name of safety.

W gave us the patriot act, Justice Roberts, and Afghanistan. It's said he had a chance to take out bin Laden but he thought there would be "too much" collateral damage.
