Oldest preserved warship in the world
Launched 11 years before we became a country
227 ft long
100+ cannons
Crew of over 800 men
Over 6500 square yards of sails (an entire football field including end zones)
Comprised of an estimated 6000 trees
Most notorious victory was over 20 years after the end of it's expected life

Watching these things in battle must have been mind-blowing

Not exactly the same, but people build scale RC models of these types of ships (end even more modern dreadnoughts/battleships) with working armament and put them in lakes/ponds/pools and have battles/recreate famous battles.

There are a ton of videos on YouTube.

That drawing of the ship is interesting to explore if you zoom into it.

There's a dude getting flogged and a guy getting his leg amputated.

They show the berthing situation in the video. It looks horrendous.

I read a while back that a ship of the line in the age of sail was the most complex system ever designed until the space shuttle.

I don't know, man. I'd think WWII was exponentially better.

I don't have any reason to not believe that. The rigging alone is insanely complex.

He’s not getting flogged…they strung him up in front of a cannon and the other guy is holding a torch ready to light the fuse!

That’s pretty brutal!

That’s why the majority of the crew were captured, conscripted or convicts. It was a hard life.
