We determined we would make it a family rule: Our children would not be allowed to spend the night at their friends’ homes. We believed they would face a particular kind of vulnerability if they found themselves alone and in bed outside our care, and we wanted to protect them from it.

The irony is that they are creating the very thing they want to keep their kids away from.

Yes and no.

I'm kind of hopeful that I only have boys. Would prefer to not deal with the evil and drama that is a junior high, pre pubescent group of girls. My little brother's social life was no drama, while mine included fricking mind games from my "girlfriends" in late elementary and junior high. Boys are emotionally easy to raise, at least compared to raising girls.

Sadly, the world has changed in the last few decades, and it is no longer a safe place for children. Pedophiles and child molesters are more pervasive than ever.

That's bullshite.

True. But they know what I'm capable of. They will weigh the "I could be eating through a straw and peeing in a bag for the rest of my life" against any deranged thing they want to do.
Name one jury in Louisiana that would send you to jail for crippling the person who molested your kids.

I understand feeling you think you know people. And you probably do. And you can't live life constantly thinking everything and everyone are out to get you. That's where it's important to find a balance of being very cautious and thorough in your research, but to also not let every single fear of "what could be" stop you and your family from living.

Exactly ...

And reading through this thread only confirms that generally, people who are extremists on either side of "arguments" like these are idiots - both the ones fanatical in their overbearing, stifling, over protectiveness and the morons who stick their heads in the sand regarding the obvious dangers to children in today's society & continue to spout the bullshite that nothing has changed from 1950. ... There is a happy medium, a balance, in raising children, with their safety always taking precedence, and yes, "times" & society change over generations, so good parents usually don't turn a blind eye to that. ... I wish people were made to take & pass common sense exams before procreating.

I would argue that if your "thing" is messing with kids, then no amount of reason or rationality is going to stop that over time.

Anyway, I'm just playing devil's advocate. I'm sure your kids are fine. I can't believe what a "cult of the kid" this country has become.

There's also such things as an unnecessary risk.
If you don't know or trust one if your kids friend's people and they insist on having sleepovers just make them come to your house.
Problem solved.

Idk what's going on at your house but exactly what's happening at mine.

This is what I always did when there was ever a question about my children's friends' home life, and generally, those parents were happier that I offered. Was never an issue. Again, common sense.
