Long story with good info, but the highlights are:

1) The long-held belief that all MS river levees in NOLA are are to 20 feet isn't correct. Most are, but plenty of spots are below 20 feet, including near the upriver portion of Uptown (by the USACE offices), 9th ward, and St Bernard Parish

2) The "mismatch" between river height and levee height, mentioned by some on here in the run-up to Barry, has been officially confirmed. Generally, the difference is 0.8 feet. Meaning, a 19 ft river height is the same as 18.2 feet when compared to a levee height. So, if the levee is 20 feet, instead of 1.0 feet of room, we really have 1.8 feet.

3) USACE now realizes they need additional river gages downriver from Carrollton Gage.

What wasn't mentioned, but perhaps may be part of this at some point, is changes to the operational manuals for Bonnet Carre and Morganza in the event of a high river during hurricane season.

Of course this crap had to be interjected into the article.

Meh. Global climate patterns have changed for millions of years, long before we had SUVs. Changes in global climate patterns can impact day to day weather.

It's ok to recognize our climate has been, is, and always be evolving, while at the same time, having huge doubts as to how much impact, if any, humans are having.

I wonder what amount they're thinking here. There's a good amount already. A dozen iirc

Looking at the river gages site that the USACE has, looks like 9 downriver from Carrollton to West Bay, and 4 in the passes. However, none of those 13 have forecasts associated with them.

Maybe that's what they mean - have forecasted gages.

All I know is that brilliant and conscientious public servants are all over this, and we have nothing to worry about.

Ridiculous that this is the case with today's technology. Having both elevations tied to the same datum should be the standard.

Some of us are no longer drinking from plastic and styrofoam so did NOLA take this in account because now global warming risks have lowered somewhat.

Styrofoam go cups > Plastic go cups, for purposes of temperature maintenance

Styrofoam go cups < Plastic go cups, for purposes of longevity of use/souvenir mementos.

Agreed, but on face value that’s not what the writer is getting at. Man made climate change is one of the most arrogant claims there is.

9th ward

It seems like they would have made the levee about 80 feet here after Katrina.
