Instagram knew that its app was making teenage girls feel worse about their bodies, internal documents from the company allegedly reveal.

“Thirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse,” the researchers said in a March 2020 slide presentation posted to Facebook’s internal message board, reportedly seen by The Wall Street Journal. “Comparisons on Instagram can change how young women view and describe themselves.”

More slides included similar messages: “We make body image issues worse for one in three teen girls,” said one slide from 2019. Another read: “Teens blame Instagram for increases in the rate of anxiety and depression. This reaction was unprompted and consistent across all groups”.

According to the findings, 13 per cent of British users and six per cent of American users believed that Instagram was a source of suicidal thoughts. Yet Instagram remains a key social media platform for young people, with over 40 per cent of the app’s demographic under the age of 22.

We really should ban social media for under 21. It’s worse than alcohol by far for their development

Meanwhile, the tech moguls take in billions at their expense and bankroll nutcase activist groups.

No it didn't. Their low self esteem made them feel worse. If instagram didn't exist, these young girls would still feel "worse."

I mean it’s awful for humanity overall but especially kids. They are junkies for it. Take a teens phone away and watch what happens.

maybe stop posting shite to get validation, and then blame depression and anxiety when you do not get what you seek.

There has been some medium used to drive young women insane since the birth of mass communications.

That magazine cover highlights the decay of society.

“Success is bad” “let other dudes frick your wife”.

The only thing on my instagram is travel or landscape photos.

The average human can't handle social media. Either for decision making or self esteem.

Just Facebook doing Facebook things. Remember when FB was created to rate how hot college chicks were?

And yet we have 11, 12, and 13 year olds at my school with unrestricted and unmonitored use of Tik Tok on their personal phones.

Was parenting always this shitty and clueless or is this a new thing?

Having a teenage daughter in the age of Instagram is really weird. I'm sure other dads can relate. It's like they plan every social event around a good location to take pics to post on Instagram, then they all post the same gooofy group pics with weird hashtags.

I know that's not what the thread is about.

I mean, when I was that age we walked around the neighborhood with BB guns shooting them at each other, started fires in the woods, had stashes of Playboys in the woods, and I could go on. I wouldn't say my parents were shitty. Every generation of kids deals with older generations telling them how shitty their parents are for doing things they don't understand or get.

Yeah but all the bullshite filters and people only posting seemingly perfect lives fricks with young teenage girls even more. Teenage girls have always struggled with this shite but this throws gas in the fire for sure. Mix in parents who do not give a shite enough to regulate it and it can become a big issue.

I remember listening to a guy on Rogan a few years ago who was pointing out the near perfect correlation between bumps in teenage girls suicide rates and when new social media platforms debuted. Said that even if you can push off use of those platform from 13/14 to 16/17 it does wonders for their ability to handle it.
