I went camping in Colorado last week and only saw a handful of people.

Max Patch is a terrific day hike right on the Appalachian Trail, easily accessible, with one of the best views of the mountains. The site is at the top of Max Patch mountain, just under 5,000 feet. The drive to the trailhead goes nearly to the top, and the AT runs right through

Looks like trashy people are to blame.

Any place accessible by car is susceptible to crowds like that. You don't have to hike far to get away from people - maybe a couple miles.

That or COVID has forced everyone to find things to do outdoors.

I went to a couple of national parks in the area a couple of months after the shutdowns and it was packed.

Smoky Mountains NP is the most visited national park in the country by far. I'm talking like twice as many visitors as the next ranked national park.

Luckily, there's so much state and federal forestland around the park that there are tons of secluded areas if you know where to go.

1 mile with some vertical thrown in cuts out 90% of the crowd everywhere you go.

Cades Cove is another frustrating area. You have to be there around sunrise to have a relatively stress free experience.

Id argue that listicles shared on Facebook are much worse for secluded sights. I hate that as places get more popular the trash gets much worse.

2 weeks from now I will be camping in Colorado and will likely not see another person. If you get far enough away from roads people become less of an issue.

In my experience, the longer the hike the better quality of people you encounter, and so fewer trashy elements. Totally agree.
