"Innocent people do not run from the police."

Title is a quote from Derrick Stafford's attorney in opening arguments from his trial as reported by the Town Talk.

It is interesting to see this quote coming from a criminal defense attorney. I don't think that I've ever heard one say that before.

Sure they do. Some people have been conditioned to fear the cops

In the philosophical sense that none of us are innocent, I suppose you're correct.

run from police = guilty
Innocent = not run
Guilty = may or may not run
Innocent = not run
Guilty = may or may not run

It isn't an admission of guilt but technically it's evading arrest or whatever

Not to mention that in some circumstances people get involved with something not realizing that legally they are not at fault. Yet they take off out of fear of something bad happening to them.

Innocent people have no reason to run from police

As soon as you run, you've automatically committed a crime. So if you were innocent before, you're not anymore

that's a lame copout, no pun intended. If you have done nothing wrong, you engage in conversation and go about your way. In fact, the very act of running from the cops makes you not-innocent anymore, seeing as how that act in itself is a crime.
So no, innocent people do not run from the cops.

Well, it's not really evading arrest if they are not trying to arrest you. I don't think that running from the police is always going to be a criminal act. In some instances it certainly is.

You must have been a boring teenager.

I wouldn't trust a cop to arrest me
Regardless they're going to be rough when they do it at least. Usually obnoxiously so

I did plenty of normal teenage "getting into mischief". Guess what, multiple times I actually did run from the cops! Guess what? I wasn't innocent in any of those situations!

I'm not running, I'm just trying to get far enough away to throw out my weed.

I have been cuffed twice in my life. Never was the cop rough. You know why? Because I did exactly what he said.

Innocent people run from cops because they don't want to risk being killed.

Then they'll just die tired.

Let me get this straight.
-Person is innocent and knows that they're innocent.
-Person gets scared that the cop might kill them, for no apparent reason.
-Solution in this case is to....run from said power-abusing cop.
Man you can't make some of this up.
