Bleck, two-tone with a gold dial and gaudy embellishments. I'd sell or trade it, too. And I like watches.

edit: that watch would look killer with some tassled penny loafers and pleated slacks

i inherited a rolex about 10 years ago. I was surprised how little it was worth, about $500. Although mine needs a new crystal.

There is no way in hell I would sell it though, it was my grandfathers.

I think it's ugly. But I would keep it because that's the right thing to do.

Dude, you are a real piece of crap... do you really need money that bad? This is an inherited gift from your father-in law.

I'm sure that he didn't give you his watch for you to immediately sell it.

Just a wild speculation... how do you know this gesture is not a test? If you sell the watch that shows a complete lack of respect for your father-in-law's properties... a good way to get written out of the will...

Does it make any sound when the second hand is moving? Does the second hand sweep when it moves or does it "tick" to each second? These can be a clue as to whether it is real or not but serial number is necessary too.

Honestly, I love watches and it looks like something someone at the top of a MLM scheme would wear. You don't sell it though.

I love how someone asks a simple question like, how much is this worth. And most of the replies are about selling a gift, needing cash, how to tell if it fake, etc.

This hasn't been the case in many many years. The chinese have been able to produce really convincing movements that move exactly like a real one would. Sometimes it's hard for me to even tell.

The post wasn't about simply selling a watch. It was about inheriting something from a family member who is still alive. If the FIL wanted the dumb arse to have cash he would have given him cash.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is if he's trying to sell it. The FIL gave it to him and as far as I'm concerned, once something is given to you then you can do whatever you please with it.

My grandpa passed away 3-4 years ago and had just bought a brand new King Ranch F-150 and it got given to me and I sold that thing ASAP and haven't lost a day of sleep over it.

Didn't like the color, wasn't 4x4 and my current truck was fine at the time.

Unless your wife is going to leave you if you sell it then do whatever with it. I would suggest getting her blessing though.

Cause it's a douchebag move made by someone that, more than likely, has always had stuff given to him, so he doesn't appreciate it.

As much as the OT loves those things, you can't compare a F150 to a Rolex. If taken care of, a Rolex can last for generations.

I don't think that's at issue. I don't think any of us are suggesting that selling it shouldn't be his choice, just that it would be a terribly tacky and disrespectful thing to do.

New truck is not a family heirloom. It's a tool to be used that you apparently had no need for.

Now if you'd said some classic car or something, that would be a better comparison.

I'm not saying it's the best thing that could be done in the situation at all. I just don't think it's that big of a deal if that's what he decides to do.

I scanned through the posts, but do we know if this is actually a family heirloom, or did just the FIL own it?

I would try to give it back to him. I 100% would not keep it. I would not want to spend ever how much it cost every year or 2 to get it serviced. So I would try to give it back and if he insisted then I would sell it.

Quit giving the OP advice. This is a test by his Father-In-Law. If the OP sells it, the FIL will put his daughter's money in a very tight trust so the OP will never benefit from any of it until they divorce.

Let the dude sell it......

To be fair to the OP, we don't know the FIL... he could be some a-hole that has a bunch of money and buys expensive watches on a whim. if that's the case, then selling the watch would be fine.

However, if the FIL brought the watch after years of hard work, that watch symbolizes his years efforts, sacrifices, failures, set-backs, and accomplishments...

If he then give that watch to you... it's not only a watch, but a representation of himself. An honor that he bestows on you because he thinks that you are worthy... (obliviously he thought wrong).
