I lived in Leigh’s cove across from mike Anderson’s from 2009-2013, we walked to AM Mart so many times for lunch/dinner. The girl behind the counters name was Karen and she knew us by name.
And yeah pretty sure it was $5.99 when I was there. Like many others said, still worth it at $9.50

My understanding is he sold American Market to the Asian folks quite some time ago (early 2000's I believe).
The dude that used to help him run it moved to the store in Tigerland.
