The picture in the link is of Valles Marineris, the largest known canyon in the solar system. Our last Mars rover was in the billions.

Sending a rover to another planet, having it land, boot-up, then begin rolling around and taking samples is a far cry different then sending a satellite for flyby pictures....
we were doing the picture thing back in the 60s and 70s baw.

Well when you do something first it's always going to be more expensive.

I talked to a conspiracy theorist who believes mars really isn't red, I never asked him why he believes that as he said it in passing while talking about how the government hides and pushes its propaganda.
So yeah..mars supposedly being a different color means something to some people.
