Times up, OP. Tell us about Ed. 70k millionaire? Balding and overcompensating? What's your take

Sounds like a social climber douchebag. Forward progress is admirable but some guys are fixated on it to an obnoxious or even toxic degree.

Smart to a point, but money doesn't buy class or refinement. There are lots of trashy rich people. I'd rather marry the daughter of a music professor (for example) than marry a Kardashian. Not rich, but cultured.

Could certainly understand someone who's been burned by gold diggers having that view. Interpreted your post (JMO), though, that he's quite young & has landed a $$$ job, and probably deserves a diva just as shallow until he grows up some.

You can be both shallow and smart at the same time.

I won’t knock any person for having the self awareness to know exactly what they’re compatible with. If that’s the type of lifestyle your boy wants as well, why wouldn’t he want someone the same? He’d be stupid to want nice vacations and have expensive taste, and then date/marry a woman who hates that. They’d fight every day.

Edit - I took OP to mean legitimately well off and successful. Not someone maxing out credit cards.

I think it's pretty shallow of him but that's just me.

I know Ed.

Ed is the kind that came from a lower middle class family. He came into money at a relatively young age due to some sales job. Appearance has always been huge to Ed. The "illusion" of coming from money and how he is perceived is more important to him than mostly anything.

Ed is a member of his HOA. Ed is definitely a member of the country club. Ed wears Costas and has a Rolex.

Ed married into a family of "old money" and tries to distance himself from his own family. Ed settled for marrying a "meh" girl in the looks category who also puts value in silly shite. They have 3 kids and she's a stay at home that takes tennis lessons. Deep down inside, Ed is a cool guy but unfortunately, it's been squashed by desperately wanting to appear rich and has let go of all of his cool attributes. Deep down, Ed is unhappy.

I see it both ways. “New Money” can be poison I’ll say that much.

Neither fiancée nor I came from money, both grew up relatively poor monetary wise but have extremely close family relationships. We both do very well now but with our childhood it keeps us humble. I wouldn’t NOT date someone because they don’t drive a brand new vehicle or have flashy toys.

I had a friend convert from Catholicism to Mormonism so he could marry a girl who Dad was LOADED. He told me, "You can marry more in a minute than you can make in a lifetime."

It's not for me, but if (heaven forbid) something happens to my wife I will definitely want to know any woman's financial situation before I got serious with her and her having her house in order would be a definite. I'd have to think all things being considered coming from money would be a plus.

Had a friend like this from HS. He had a freakin list of attributes his future wife would have. After about three years of flailing following college, he settled for something not remotely like his list.

He's been married for 30 years.
