1. If you have mechanical knowledge, consumer reports, Autocheck or carfax and are not inpatient, the best source is craigslist and autotrader. Meet to look at the car and then meet at a bank to transfer money on camera.

I used this and it worked for me
get the april edition of consumers reports and look at the best buys in used cars section
if the cheapest ones are too much, keep going back a year til you hit the ones with your price range
almost a slam dunk

I got a 79 LTD in 93 for like $800 that had less than 15k on it. I had to replace every hose and gasket on it, but that was a sweet ride. That monster glided on the highway. I think I got like 8 mpg..
