Youd be much more likely to get away with it because you probably wouldn't get pulled over. But you can get a dui for sleeping in a parked car if the keys are in the ignition, even if you're in the back seat. You may not be technically driving but I imagine you still have to turn the car on and off and push buttons to set your destination which would still make you the "operator". I really don't see the police completely giving up that revenue stream

That's just screwed up. Also imagine the embarrassment getting a DUI for rollerskating.

You can't. The Louisiana courts have said the conveyance has to be motorized, which means no DUI for bicycles (could get public intoxication or some other charge but not DUI).

During the early days of course as they will require you to be in the drivers seat and able to take over in case of failure.. I'm sure as driverless taxis and such come in line the laws will adjust.. governments will have to adjust for lost revenue and thus charge you for other things..

Well Louisiana law states you can't operate a vehicle while intoxicated so they could argue that although you weren't driving you were operating it.

I'm sure if driverless cars become the norm, the laws will be re written for better or worse.

I knew about the keys in the ignition, but I thought you had to be in the driver's seat too?

I knew a guy in college that got one like that. He was one of the last people to leave the bar that night so he didn't have a ride and knew he was too drunk to drive. He decided he'd rest in his car for an hour or two to sober up. It was January and cold so he started the car and then got in the back and laid across the seat. Cop found him and took him in for dui.

He said he was going to fight it in court but he was just an acquaintance so I never found out what happened with it.

Can you be asleep "at the wheel" when "driving" these cars? Or can you be ticketed for that?

Honestly, I feel you should still be in control of the car even if it is self driven. I think that might be an interesting situation in the future.

Yeah; but then it's not really a driverless car.
