In 1959, the US military built a subterranean ice base in Greenland

The idea was to test if such a base was feasible. Greenland is closer to Russia than Canada, so if it were possible to sustain a base underground, you could theoretically house ICBM missiles very close to Russia, under the Greenland icepack.
