The crime is kept to certain areas. These areas are not bad at all.

I guess the people who enjoy these areas just keep to themselves and never travel outside their comfort zones.

Maybe. I have hung out all over the city with these people. Someone else bought a place in deep 7th ward and we discussed what an idiot he was.

One of the guys is from Atlanta and said he didn't feel much different, but realized it wasn't safe everywhere.

I am starting to realize that this board is suffering chicken little syndrome. The crime is real, but I don't think the sky is falling.

Criminals only attack beta males and women

As long as you aren't a complete bitch, you should be fine walking anywhere in the city

Almost all the NOLA posters here want things to change. Where do you get the idea that everyone is cool with the status quo?

Look at some of the responses in the thread. Just total delusion about what matters and what doesn't. It's not just the crime and whatever, it's the lack of ambition and forward thinking.

Sick soul, but why has wage growth been particularly stagnant in New Orleans despite being insulated from the recession? Why can't the city figure out a way to foster a better business culture? Folks can blame the Others all they want, but the general attitude of NOLA is likely too laid back and hedonistic too effectuate any change.

i think the parts of the culture that matter in terms of economic development are too focused on robbing outsiders blind as soon as they can

You just described pretty much the entire southern culture.

This thread seems to embody the problems of NOLA. Nobody can get on the same page. The higher ups in city admin can't get their shite together...too many people pulling in different directions. And as some have pointed out, natives don't want to recognize the problem as much as they want to hype up the good shite that city has to offer.

Furthermore, the elephant in the room is race. From a societal standpoint, I can't understand why people constantly play into stereotypes that they would otherwise bitch about. The crimes committed in New Orleans exemplify those of a community in which people don't even know how to act like civilized humans.

Not trolling at all. I walk all neighborhoods in the city without problems.

Crime preys on the weak and helpless.

I'm from New Orleans and live in Houston. I still visit New Orleans often but can't wait to get back to Houston after about a week.

The place is a dump and the people have such negative attitudes.

Yeah, the place has all of your local nostalgia that you grew up with that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, but if it wasn't for that the place would have no redeeming qualities at all and feel like any other 3rd world dump.

It's typical Houston culture to sound like a complete pussy when it comes to visiting NOLA. Sorry Katy and Tomball can't touch the uniqueness and charm of NOLA.

It's one of the most dangerous cities in the country. It's very real.

but I don't think the sky is falling.

The bad crime is accompanied by a pisspoor white collar job market, very high housing costs (in large part due to the short term rental market and some wealthy people with second homes), terrible public schools, terrible infrastructure, wasteful spending, and a very corrupt government. And when those short term rental properties (which I don't have a problem with) start pushing out a lot of middle to upper-middle class residents and replacing them with a revolving door of tourists (who can't vote), you're left with a relatively huge underclass choosing who runs the city. I think the sky kind of is falling.

BOOM. and this can be applied to the whole state. People in La get so mired in defending this state and apologizing and rationalizing its shortcomings that they lose sight of the reason for the criticism in the first place. Its (usually) not a troll job or attempt to hurt your feelings. Its that someone sees something wrong and points it out in hopes it can get fixed. Yet most people in this state immediately go into defense mode. If La. would address the issue instead of getting defensive there'd be fewer things to criticize.

Yeah but they don't lift often enough and (equally as important) eat clean like Burt does. Dude is yoked as frick which is why I don't think he can relate to us betas who have to keep our head on a swivel when leaving Commander's Palace.

It's not just a NOLA thing either. Had the same scenario happen to wife & I at the theater near Mall of BR.

I lived in Houston for two years and it was miserable. Don't kid yourself, it has its fair share of crime without any of the positives that nola has. My apartment was broken into while I was on vacation and I lived in rice village which was supposed to be a nice area.

Really nothing to do there and everything there is to do is always an inconvenient 20-30 minute drive. Really no green areas to speak of or nature; just a cookie cutter concrete jungle. The few parks they have are extremely crowded. City Park is the second largest park inside city limits next to central park and Audubon park is gorgeous. It takes forever to get out of the urban sprawl and when you actually get out of the sprawl, there's nothing worth seeing except cookie cutter neighborhoods and a shitty beach in galveston where you can't see your feet and get stung by sting rays.

The people are philistines and don't have much to offer in conversation other than maybe golf, sports or what happened last week on the bachelorette. Extremely soulless and boring like the city itself. Its one redeeming quality is that it's two and a half hours from Austin.
