If you go to Mexico or any Central American or Carribbean country, stay to the resort as much as possible. Don't go on vacation and NOT go to a resort if it's your first time there. If you leave the resort, don't drink or take anything offered to you, and really have your wits about you with anything you buy. fricking over tourists is big business in these places. There's hardly any repercussion for them if you accidentally die, either. The less touristy you seem, the safer you are.

I don’t remember ever being served tap water at a resort, it’s always been bottled

I've been before in the 90s, but I doubt I'll ever go back. Too many other places in the Caribbean to visit that are far more stable.

Exactly. People go to Mexico because it’s stupid cheap. You get what you pay for there mainly

The key is I always book a 5 star resort and go directly in a private transfer to the resort and then I don’t leave. I wouldn’t rent a car or go exploring on my own anywhere near that area.

That sounds terrible

Exactly. That is the kind of vacation I avoid. I just rented a car in Costa Rica and drove to several different towns. I wouldn't do that in Mexico, but Costa Rica and Panama are fine.

We should go take it over. Half of them are here anyway. Then we could ship them all back.

I went in with about 10 or 15 other people from my class when we graduated in 1995. We had an absolute blast and no issues whatsoever. With that said you couldn’t pay me to go to Cancun now. It’s a shite hole compared to what it used to be.

I was actually going to respond that if I’m somewhere like Costa Rica, I want to rent a car and explore like I’ve done previously. In Mexico, I pick a place with everything I need at the resort. Those type of vacations I want to eat, drink, and relax without children.

The mexicans did an investigation and said no illicit drugs were found in their systems and it was alcohol. They weren't even in cancun

When I saw the headline for this story I was suspicious as well. Mexican authorities could be lying but teenage girls getting trashed so bad that one needed an hospital visit are also likely to lie about it.

Your friend and I have had polar opposite experiences if that's the case.

In any event, that is horrible that they took advantage of your friend and I implore any who is interested that Costa Rica is a beautiful country full of beautiful people and from my personal experience of multiple visits to the country, this is way outside the norm.

'We both got water and within two minutes, Jake had turned around and we both hit the bar, heads down at the same time,' Hull, 20, told CBS News.
quote:

The college students have declined to reveal the names of their hotel or hospital, fearing for their safety.
quote:

Doctors say they have not found anything wrong with Hull, even though she has experienced at least 18 convulsions.

. . .

She will require physical therapy to learn how to walk again.

And then there’s this article:
quote:

Officials in Mexico have claimed the allegations that two college students were drugged with fentanyl-laced drinks at a resort are false.
quote:

It was previously reported they were in Cancun, but in fact they were staying at a hotel in Isla Mujeres, the investigation revealed.
quote:

He told local media his office has approached the United States Consulate to get in touch with the families but is yet to hear back.

'Through the consulate we requested more information from the relatives, but there was no response, there was no interest or intention from the relatives to give us more details of what happened,' Cueto said.

I don’t know wtf is going on here but there are some elements of this story that don’t make much sense. The “chilling photo” showing “the moment two Oklahoma college students almost died” is them.. holding hands? With two full glasses of water (allegedly)?

They’ll talk to the news about how Mexico is so dangerous (not that it isn’t), share this entire story, but not name the hotel or hospital?

The doctors don’t know what’s wrong with her but they know she’ll need PT to learn how to walk again.. a day after she came off the vent?

I’m not saying the whole thing is bullshite, but it definitely feels like there may be some bullshite elements at play here. Maybe I’m wrong, the whole thing just seems quite odd to me. When I see “GoFundMe” my bullshite detector immediately goes into overdrive.
