just go to your local petsmart on a saturday or sunday and adopt a scrappy little mutt. That's what I did, and I couldn't be happier

If you can deal with the quirks, which any reasonable and devoted person can, rescue dogs are beyond awesome. Our golden is a weirdo rescue but as a lady at the vet once told me "once he learns to love somebody, he loves them with everything he's got."

The adoption place on Highland Road between Staring and Kenilworth has been advertising puppies lately.

You might want to look at the outlier towns for good rescues also. Like West Baton Rouge, The Felicianas, Gonzales, etc.

We adopted ours from Petsmart in 2002. She's about 15 now and has been the sweetest little beagle you could have ever asked for. I was happy to have a full grown dog.
It's much more economical to start. I agreed to take 2 of my neighbors kittens years ago and spent a fortune on shots, neutering, spaying.
