Adopt. Ask petsmart when their next adoption day is or call your local shelters.

Be careful and don't fall for a puppy just because it's cute and adorable. Genetic traits, both good and bad, are passed down to puppies. Buying from a breeder helps you take some of the uncertainty out of the equation. I hope you're up for the training.

Much much lower chance of genetic risks and issues with mutts. They have what is referred to as "hybrid vigor".

Health is only one thing to consider. One of the most important is temperament.

damn thats a good looking dog for a petsmart adoption day

Yeah, we got really lucky with her. She is crate & house trained and loves people. We were thinking of buying a puppy, but this absolutely worked out for the best. Not sure how she found her way to the shelter. No way someone willingly gave this dog up.

ARNO in New Orleans is a no-kill shelter and they always have some great dogs.

Thank you, we will definitely check there.
Here is a link to their website.

LINK

They run updated photos of the dogs available for adoption if you click on the "Adopt" tab on their website. The organization is called "Friends of the Animals" and the adoption house is called "The Dog Adoption House" appropriately enough.

Their goal is to eliminate healthy dogs from being euthanized just because no one knows the dogs are available for adoption.

Their dogs are examined by a vet before they can be adopted and have all required vaccinations including rabies with the rabies tag. Volunteers "foster" their dogs at their homes until they are adopted which means the dogs go "home" at night and the foster person brings the dog back to the Dog House each morning.

We actually had to meet the foster person for our puppy for her approval before we could adopt it. They try to match the dog with the family who wants to adopt. For example, if a dog is not good around small children, they won't let such a family adopt the dog.

You might call around to vets and see if any puppies have come in for their first exams and worming.

I never once thought about adopting until my wife suggested it. Before I would always go and buy a puppy, but now I will look to adoption first. Is it really that inconceivable?
