it's pretty cool how specific you can be with searches for playlists/stations now

the playlists are easily my favorite feature of Spotify (other than the endless catalog in general). i build my own a lot plus you can search up all kinds of stuff.

Exactly. I don't know why anyone would pay for it when you can easily fast forward any ads. I didn't know so many people here actually paid for it when you can get it for free.

My random thoughts on this topic.

I've paid for Spotify since 2011 and upgraded to Family Premium around 2016(6 people can have their own account under my main account for $18/month). The price would have to double for me to consider dropping it.

The collaborative playlist sharing is really cool. You can do it with anyone who's got Spotify but for us it came in especially handy on a family vacation.
In 2021 we drove 3000 miles all over Grand Canyon/Yellowstone/Rushmore/etc.
I joined all the kids' playlists into a giant mash-up and downloaded all 4000 songs to my phone in the highest quality. It was PERFECT way to appease 6 of us in a minivan all those hours.

Oh and if you don't pay for Spotify you can't download the songs. Good Luck Streaming music while driving through BFE Arizona, South Dakota, Wyoming.

My daughter has come home from school a few times bragging about having Spotify Premium to play music for sporting events/cheer practice/etc
It seems most of her friends have ad-based music services.

definitely not a big loss, especially when considering the sheer volume of what IS available. that said, i would like to have his first ten years worth of albums or so.

semi-related, the ongoing internet joke / theory about him being a mass murderer is one of my favorite things.

Aren’t you a “younger” guy (and by that I mean 35-45 years old)?

Yes i fit that criteria.

I know it has somethign to do with music and/or podcasts. I dont' listen to podcasts, or understand why i have to get an app to download them then play them. Just put the fricking thing on youtube like a normal person.
I would assume you're justing buying music on it, which i also haven't done since i was like 18 years old buying CD's. There's plenty of free listening apps and i've downloaded like 20,000 songs back in teh day and still have them all on a hard drive and labeled correctly to easily find what i'm looking for.

It's probably my most used app aside from Google.

If you're an avid music listener it's still well worth the price.

Having pretty much any music I want in a very UI-friendly package for 10-20 bucks a month is not in that category.

I think a lot of how people see it is generational. From HS through my early 40s I probably averaged at least $60 a month spent on music and even at the end of that when I had over 2000 albums on vinyl or CD it was nothing like the selection I have now for 1/3 as much spent per month. Compare that to the Napster generation that grew up on "free" music and any price seems high except what they are willing to pay for the UI backbone.

It is also a bit like streaming video where I still spend less than I did for cable but I have far more choice and I mean far more. However, you can only watch so much so for a lot of people the options you get may seem overpriced like the person back in the day who listened to 5 albums and never bought anything new. That option still exists either in physical media copied into the digital realm or iTunes etc.
