re: If your house flooded this past August, would you hang a picture of your flooded house?

Yes I would. We got over 6 feet. I have no issues if someone did not want you. For us it would be a great reminder for how fourtubate we are.

I didn't have to evac either. I left before water came way up but I wouldn't want a picture to look at every day. A few things are not perfect during the restoration and I am ok with those "scars" showing. My old house has a little more character now. She has been through a lot.

My wife's grandfather's house flooded during Katrina. We live in it now, and we have a pic of him out in front in a pirogue. He had it hanging up as well. I like it, and I'd imagine I'd take a similar pic if it were to happen again.

makes for a good recovery story. look at how bad it was and look at it now.

I would. Shows resilience.

We have a scrap book of our flooded house and the renovation after Katrina. No pics hanging on the wall though but we did have a plaque on the wall where the water line came up to in the house. We no longer live in that house but I'm sure the plaque is still there.

I think it would be a good conversation piece, as long as it was done nicely (good quality photo, nicely framed).
The only downside that I could see is that if you or one of your house guests knew someone who died in the flood, it could make for a sensitive subject.

I could see it going either way. Some might find the pic depressing and they'd like to forget while others would find inspiration or at least nostalgia.
No right/wrong answer here imo.

Unlike some people, I keep reminders of failures and losses around me. When I was younger, I stapled rejection letters from colleges, scholarships, and jobs on my wall. I keep a card from a person who betrayed me, because it reminds me of what a shite she is. I keep my failed first attempts at things - paintings, writings, etc. All these things motivate me to push harder every day.
Sometimes it's good to be reminded of struggle. When life gets too easy for you, you need a reminder of what it was like when you were hungry, and life was hard. You should remind yourself of who and what you can trust, and why.
Some might see this habit as unhealthy, but to me, it's the exact opposite. I'm rarely happier than when I prove someone or something wrong about me, or when I overcome adversity. Reminders of these things are not helpful to everyone, but they are helpful to me, for sure.

When I drive through DS and see people just getting started on demolition it reminds me of what it was like the first few weeks afterwards. I think about all I've learned. In some cases, I'm glad I didn't know what was ahead of me in that moment b/c it would have seemed insurmountable. After having gone through it and having learned what I have, I know I can handle a great deal so long as my loved ones are safe. Do I want to go through it again? No. Do I need a picture to remind me? No.
The flood brought my little neighborhood together and reminded me there are a lot of very good people in this world. The entire situation could have been much worse, but the goodness of people helped make getting through those long months of uncertainty much easier. I was/am fortunate.

I have some good panoramics of the debris pile in front of my house. That would be a good one too.

Fried of mine had a tree split his house in two during Gustav.
He took a 4' section of the tree to a local artist who sculpted a beautiful pelican out of it.
It looks awesome and is a cool conversation piece.
