Get out of here with that perfectly logical statement

So lots of kids in Louisiana have poor aptitude, got it.

Yeah that's a bunch of crap right there. If I wouldn't have been able to attend a magnet public HS I would have had to go to Glen Oaks or Istrouma High in BR, cause no way could my parents afford private nor move. Instead of being in classrooms full of other students like me...that actually wanted to learn...I would have been stuck in classrooms where teachers are too busy trying to control their students behavior than actually be able to teach.

I mean yeah...you have enough drive you can learn in any situation. But obviously the quality of the education is going to be better in the school with like minded students that all want to learn.

Do you read what you type? You contradict yourself in back to back sentences.

To the AtlantaLSU guy, where in La. did you move back to?

Where all in La. have you been? Lake Charles? Monroe? Alexandria? Frankly I find it interesting that nobody (unless I missed it) has mentioned any of those places. Just curious where your points of reference are.

No I didn't.

I could have still gotten enough of an education to graduate if I went to the Istrouma or Glen Oaks. However...it would paled in comparison to the amount AND quality of education I got by going to a magnet school. Having access to teachers that can actually teach me and answer my questions...instead of spending half their time disciplining kids that don't give a shite about school is key. Teachers that actually challenged how you thought and didn't just give you the easiest homework/assignments so that you could pass.

Name one public HS in Baton Rouge (besides Baton Rouge High...which is the only true magnet left and gonna be much more difficult for kids to get into now) that is able to provide a quality environment for kids to actually learn. That isn't plaqued by students with severe behavioral issues, drugs, and violence.

If you're an OT baller the answer is NOLA.

If you're not quite an OT baller the answer is Covington/Mandeville.

There is literally no city in Louisiana that I haven't been to. Zwolle? Marion? Been there worked the town. I use to travel the world and the country, now I focus more on the state.

Baton Rouge is my home.

You realize there's an entire state outside of BR, right?

I went to public HS in an area that most people consider one of the dumber parts of the state. At last count, in my small group of friends I graduated with 3 doctors, 3 attorneys, 2 CPA's and several engineers. I have an accounting degree and MBA. People with the aptitude and ability will succeed in any situation. Conversely, I know a bunch of people from private schools who are now burn-outs

"everything is better in Texas culture". for example you thinking that those are specific to texas.

Just look at the two "mottos" of the states.
Texas- everything is bigger in texas
LA- sportmans paradise, let the good times roll

I see what you're saying but there is a lot of trash, horrible infrastructure as mentioned in LA. As a friend told me one time... 'Texans seem to have a lot of pride from being in Texas." I would say there are plenty of people from LA who have just as much pride and maybe it doesn't come across as arrogance, etc. Granted, I don't know what everyone thinks but it seems I see a lot more people bash Louisiana than bash Texas - and maybe that's where some pride comes from.

To each his own

And you realize the situation I was discussing was specifically THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SITUATION IN BR. Since the other poster LIVES IN BR and my friend that is moving away also LIVES IN BR.

Anyone from BR knows just how bad the public school situation is here. You basically have no option but to send your kids to private or move just outside of BR to send your kids to a non EBR parish school.

Its 30% student, 60% parenting and 10% school. All these people in BR screaming their "chirren" need better teachers and nicer schools couldn't be more wrong. they need better parents.

You obviously have no idea just HOW bad some of the schools are in BR though.

It's more that there are not large concentrations of "good students" in many areas. LA's "larger" cities happen to be dominated by poorer minorities. The white flight to private school has left very little in the way of motivated student in the public schools. Look at Mandeville for instance. If the rest of the state had that concentration on middle class to upper middle class students, there would be high functioning public schools all across the state. But even in the rural areas, your numbers of middle class to upper middle class families are outnumbered by the poorer class who don't value education as much. If momma and daddy don't care about school, neither will the kid.

I'm not saying some school systems aren't bad. But, I blame that on the students as well. You aren't going to get good teachers wanting to teach there, and it will fall into a cycle. And even if you took great teachers and put them in a bad performing district, the students ultimately dictate the outcome and it will still fail.

I'd love to take an entire class of kids from poor performing areas and bus them into the highest performing schools. A 13 year experiment. From Kindergarten to 12th grade. They get the same teachers and facilities. Teachers get paid the same. Only thing is they do not mix in with kids from that area. It would be as if the school system suddenly traded places, but the student body remained the same. I bet you wouldn't see a 1% increase in performance.

Some of the facilities aren't the best but does that really matter?

That's not what I mean. It's a safety issue for many parents. They don't feel comfortable sending their kids to the same schools with juvenile delinquents and kids that just don't care at all. They aren't just worried about the quality of education....they are worried about their teen's safety.

I can remember 20 years ago when I was in HS. I grew up in a poor, mostly black neighborhood in NBR. I went to a magnet HS and the other kids in my neighborhood went to schools like Istrouma and Glen Oaks. I was still friends with kids my age in my neighborhood and the stories they told me about their school was wayyyyyyyyyyyy different than where I went to school at. Telling me how their school had numerous fights everyday. Worrying about potential gang fights. Kids selling drugs at school. Getting beaten up for being one of the few white kids at the school(friend of mine got jumped in the girls bathroom by a gang of black girls yelling racial insults to her when she was a freshman).

And this was 20 years ago. I can only imagine it has gotten worse and not better.
