Deadspin has been running some interesting articles from a guy who served 10 years in prison for a series of armed robberies he committed in Manhattan.
He says the majority of rapes that occur in prison are due to gambling and drug debts. And they're more coercion than the types of rape scenes you see in American History X or Oz.
He has some interesting stories about prison life in general. His last entry was about how the gangs would always hire guys with second degree murder charges to do their dirty work since they were never going to get out in the first place. They would then get rewards after finishing their solitary punishment:

I've taught a few classes at the women's penitentiary. They live in dorms. They put them in lockdown if they are caught with a cellphone or diddling another inmate.

Where can this be found?

the most exotic weapon I saw was a lit cigarette butt dropped on the floor and immediately stamped flat with a boot. The melting filter became a plane that, upon cooling, developed a bit of an edge, like a very sharp and serrated blade. That one belonged on MacGyver. I never witnessed it in action, but I did see another feat of improvisation: In 2010, a man who was cut with a can lid only five feet away from me proceeded to snap his own glasses in half and use the two arms to poke his assailant mercilessly.
badass stuff

Yep, there are cameras everywhere. I couldn't do isolation. Most guys in prison aren't all that bad, but I guess that depends on where the prison is located.

My first inclination would be segregation, but everything I've read says that it drives most people insane eventually.

Has anyone in here actually been locked up? Before they put you in gen population they make you watch this video on prison rape. It's hilarious. Like an orientation video you might watch at a new job, except this one shows what to do if you get to your cell and you have a snickers bar on your pillow from another inmate

Cell block is segregation.
Angola has 3 levels
Dormitories
Cell Block (2 to a cell)
Lock down ( Administrative segregation)
Very few live in lock down or want to. You have the bare essentials ( mattress, blanket, toiletries, and legal papers.
Cell block is a step above. Shared tvs, some personal items, and can have a job
Dormitories give the most freedom. You and 64 fellow inmates hanging out. Tv room and open showers. Freedom to move around. Rec yard, jobs, classes, arts and crafts, etc. A lot easier to make the days go by

I would not do well in the general population but solitary confinement would drive me more crazy than I already am.

I feel I went into solitary confinement, like the hardcore kind...I'd come out with tons of awesome ideas. I'd sink into a creative stage. I'd love it.

I saw a doc shot at a prison in Maine. They put dudes in seg/isolation cells for breaking rules.
One guy goes in perfectly sane, saying he looks forward to quiet time for reading and exercises.
Within a month, the guy is cutting himself, smearing blood and shite all over the place, etc. His experience was not uncommon. The prisoners would get so bored that would do crazy stuff like mutilation or flooding toilets just to get a little excitement.

I am an introvert. Give me enough books, pencils and paper and I'd be fine, reading and writing all alone. But it is the others in seg that would make it unbearable.
I watched the PBS investigative show on solitary the other night and the people on seg are nuts or going nuts quickly. Lots of poop-flinging, toilet flooding, screaming and cutting themselves and painting the walls with blood ( or poop)

I just watched that on PBS. Very informative indeed.

I don't know how I'd ever be able to sleep in prison. I have so many sleeping quirks. Need a oscillating fan. Need 2 pillows under my head. Another pillow between my legs, and I need to be hugging onto another pillow. frick sleeping on them metal cots.

Why? Are they giving you a choice?

They should, rex
If a prisoner has a real fear for his/her life and/or safety, dont you believe that it is the duty of the state to maintain that safety within its facility?

Most of the people sodomized are 'punks' that the block uses for getting off.
Most people who are fricked with are for gang reasons, you can keep to the outside.

They do a damn good job. I am freakin TERRIFIED of prisons to the point where if I got arrested or it looked like I was going to be sentenced to time I would legit consider offing myself.
