Why not pull it in instead of moving it forward?

This is retarded.

Say the opposite of forward - backward - and try telling someone the a meeting moved backward is now earlier.

What about turning the AC up or down? That always confused me
Just say temp or thermostat instead of AC and avoid the confusion.

Nobody moves a meeting "backward" either, it's just "back". "Forward" is the wrong word in this context.

Daylight savings' little reminder phrase is "spring forward, fall back." So that confuses it.

Yes but you're moving the clock not a meeting in relation to it, it's the opposite in that context.

Forward = closer: 8:00
Back = further: 12:00

But it's not that simple. It's a matter of perspective because "forward" is not commonly used in this context.

If you think the answer is straightforward, then you need to explain why the meaning of "forward" and "back" in time flip flop depending on whether we're talking about the past or the future. Why do "move the meeting back" and "go back in time" mean moving opposite directions on the timeline?

Because the perspective is always in relation to NOW.
