Maybe I'll make trip. What kind of people live there

I have always loved winter, it’s been true since I was a child. So I’m the last person you should take advice from -but the winters are very comfortable because it’s so much drier. I feel colder back home when it's thirty, than I do here in subzero weather.
And the snow is so powdery, especially in Montana, so you’re never scraping your windshield in the morning. You can sweep it off with one hand.
My realistic caveat, is that you would need a winter activity to stay busy, and to be happy. For most people that’s skiing, but it could be taking a snowmobile out.

I would love to live in any of these if they would not have winter.
I love winter, in fact love all 4 seasons but spring is my least favorite.

Somewhere on east side of the divide in Wyoming. Remote AF so not likely to be overrun with tourists and billionaires.

I have been wanting to move out west for a few years. Idaho has been my favorite, although the wife doesn't like it because it is remote. I would just need to pick a college team. I would miss the gulf, though.

Coeur d'Alene, ID
Bozeman, MT if you can afford it.
This is a great answer. I haven't been to Coeur d'Alene in a long time but it is so pretty.
I grew up in Bozeman, so have a few realtor friends who post on facebook. Holy crap the price of homes there now are insane. I saw one the other day that was around 1100 sq feet for over $600k.

Goodness that’s difficult- whitefish Montana

I’d pick Idaho only because you guys are young and having more entertainment and travel (airport) options would still be something y’all would like. Coeur d’Alene and Boise meet that criteria better than some of the others mentioned. If you don’t care about that at all, then Other places in MT and WY that folks have already mentioned are great choices too

I 100% agree and I hate cold weather and winter. The other thing is people in the north just dress better for the cold. Not many people in the south have winter jackets.
One plus for the south is you don't ever have to plug your car in at night so it will start the next day.

I moved to Montana to avoid urban life. I live 30 miles from the nearest full size grocery and hospital. I am retired so, immediacy is not of primary concern. There are small towns with services much closer.
If you want a somewhat urban environment and don’t mind a very conservative, dominant religious group, I would consider Idaho Falls. You couldn’t pay me to live in Bozo — way too many Californians. Bozeman is also increasingly congested. Bozeman of all the small cities in Montana probably has the best fishing, snowboarding and hunting in the area.
I wanted to retire to Wyoming because of the tax benefits, but I found it to be a tad remote. Jackson is fun to visit. Traffic can be pretty rough. Besides running I’m primarily fly fish as an outdoor activity. Wyoming’s stream access laws are very strict. Jackson Hole has great snow, but Grand Targhee’s may be better.
If small towns are your thing, Driggs Idaho is worth a look. Grand Targhee is 10 miles. There are a ton on hiking, biking trails. The Teton river is 5 miles away. The South Fork is 30 minutes. Jackson is 40 minutes (without the commuting traffic). Commuting to work in Jackson would absolutely try your patience. The road over the hill shuts down in the winter for avalanches and such.

I have a block heater in my engine, but I've never really needed it. Not even when it gets down to -35 in one of those extreme arctic bursts.
I use it, but it's not essential.

Do you go back much? Bozeman is swallowing up Belgrade, and as much as house prices have increased, there's been a crazy building boom too.
Where do these people work though? There are so many new houses on the west side of town.
