If you favorite team has a patriotic display, odds are they were paid by DOD

Because our government is almost $20 trillion in debt and they continue to spend YOUR money on anything and everything that they think is a good idea.
That is bad because more than 50 million voters are going to support a presidential candidate looking to raise taxes just to be able to spend more.
Not to mention that this money could go to families that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, if it has to be spent at all. That would come to ~$13,000 per family if given to all those that lost their lives in the last two wars.

The value and need for this sort of government spending is a different matter, IMO.

I just assumed they paid for it. I'm not a fan of the spending, but I don't understand how people assumed teams just did it to do it.

Because, people expect the teams to be patriotic out of the goodness of their hearts. Knowing that this is one big marketing scheme is a bit sad.

I can't imagine what type of mindset I would have to have to care about this. So the government advertises. They already spend millions on advertisements through commercials and signage, etc. Hell, the Army sponsors a damn high school game. What kind of idiots thought the leagues did the Patriotic stuff because 'Murica?

This is so dumb. They are more than happy to get on Tv/in front of 80k people, with many military aged or youth males among them, and provide some visibility on the military. It's just as much about recruiting as it is anything else, and of course they spend advertising dollars on recruiting.
Think about it. For most people, seeing color guards and flyovers is one of their most frequent exposures to the military. And it's glamorous.

Sens McCain and Flake are also investigating allegations that the burgers in fast food commercials look differently than they do when served to the public. They are also looking into alleged water bucket challenges on Facebook being performed not out of charity, but to garner unwarranted attention for the video's subject.
