I love how these articles presume that white, heterosexual people are really some kind of rarity but for some horrible reason that's all you ever see on TV.

I think your typical Hallmark movie is more demographically plausible than, say, Modern Family or your typical Benneton Ad of a Clusterfrick Netflix production.

You mean 2/3 of white males aren’t married to black women or gay like my commercials suggest?

I could only stomach a few paragraphs of that column. Mostly because I read Jeb Lund’s similar one already, and it’s better written and argued, and he didn’t resort to throwing out the “fascism” card.

These writers live in little bubbles, where their HR departments hire people based on their minority status or sexual identity and political affiliation. Then their friend circles end up being the same way. And suddenly they think that’s how the world actually works

Imagine being upset by this stuff. These are some miserable human beings.

I jokingly made a poliboard post on this topic. Hallmark Christmas movies really are the antithesis of our modern cultural narratives. The story we see in every hallmark movie is the same, yet it is so counter to everything else pop culture tells us we should want. In every movie, the girl’s big city life with her high powered job is unfulfilling. The small town (often where she grew up) isn’t some backwards racist wasteland but a charming, thriving community with civil pride where people care about traditions and family. The rich, successful man with the powerful title isn’t attractive to the woman, but instead, the rugged tradesman who works for one of those jobs our schools tell kids are a dead-end. The towns aren’t drug-infested or multicultural. Like most places up north outside of big cities, they’re overwhelmingly white.

All of this is basically anti-feminism. It is revealing to women what they actually desire. It runs counter to what pop culture programs women to want. Because what women actively “want” and what they actually desire and are fulfilled by are polar opposites, so many women today are depressed and unfulfilled. These movies allow them to indulge in those desires without abandoning their programmed wants. If more women chose to learn the lessons of Hallmark movies, more women would be a lot happier. Family is important, traditions are important, trades are good jobs, status and money won’t make you happy if the job is so demanding that you cannot appreciate it. Being a housewife and raising kids can be a fulfilling life if you embrace it. Christmas magic is made by people who care about one-another (usually parents, grandparents, or spouses).
