Id like a nice, big finished basement for a media room. With a half bath, fridge. Seems like it would always be nice and cool in there.

Only way you can build a basement in Southeast LA is to build your house on a mound of dirt but leave the middle of the mound empty and build your house with that as your base sublevel, and your 1st level is above that. Also you may want to build on pilings for support and hopefully it doesn't settle and start cracking.
I can remember in Terrebonne Parish they opened a brand new school, and they decided to coat the concrete floors instead of placing tiles. The floor is full of surface cracks.
Heck even Walmart is big into no tile flooring as they removed most of the white tiles after Ida.

Put an illegal bathroom and kitchen and rent that place out for extra money. Parents do this to supplement their retirement. Must have a private entrance for tenant.

We love it, I'm going to cook a gumbo downstairs for the game.

would love to have one for all the tornadoes in East Central Ms. live in a home but still scary to see damage to well built homes. would feel alot better being able to run into basement instead of lower room farthest from walls and no windows.

Had one. They are awesome man caves. Had more ideas for it than budget. 1100 sq ft of bar, darts, stripper poles, corn hole, skeet shooting, midget wrestling, and elk hunting.

The house I lived in in BR, corner of park and government, there was a small basement, like storage under 1/4 of the house.
It flooded every time it rained.
House in now in NJ, full basement, no sump pump or french drain, never took on water, not even during Sandy. It was unfinished when we bought the house, we have since finished it, my office is down there on one side, other side is a bed and living room area. Comes in handy when we have a few house guests.
Laundry is also down there. I love the basement

Can’t even bury the dead below ground in Nola, but many older homes there have a basement as the first floor for obvious reasons.

Have a finished one. Usually go down in the evenings to watch whatever game is on. Constant 67 degrees no matter what season.

Yeah! My wife watches TV upstairs and I go to the basement to watch sports or watch You Tube historic events.
Basement is also a secure place in the event of storms.

I have a 1400 sf finished basement with 3 bedrooms, a large living room , a storage room and a full bathroom. Never had a moisture or leak issue in 15 years. 1700 sf main floor. 900 sf upper floor. Large attic. 12 x 16 storage building in the back yard. Still barely have enough room to put all the crap we have held onto over the years.

Live in great white north and basements are the norm except if you live where bedrock is at ground level. My finished basement is spare bedroom, small workshop (heated in winter that's a key), mancave and storage. Also where hvac and water heater are placed. Don't use attics much in gwn for storage etc.
