Are you saying that the current administration is really run by AI?

Once again, you act like this can't be done in any form. Keep living with your head in the sand. The instructions are everywhere. So you are telling us that within a decade or two this isn't possible at all?

When the AI robots start manufacturing/reproducing themselves, humans will not be needed on the planet.

Movies like The Terminator or I,Robot may prove to be prophetic.

But but we were told on here that can never happen. Things like drones, the AI controlled fighter jets, etc, can be turned on us.

It has hit critical mass. You may convince America to stop. But China (or other nations will not). So essentially you cannot stop.

It is like Ricky Bobby said; "if you ain't first, you are last."

The shitty part is that the finish line is inevitable and delivers you to a place nobody wants to be in.

It aint the winner's circle when everyone is th fricking loser.

Because they - during their brief lifetime - expect to be the richest sob alive until the computers decide that Mother Earth needs to be protected from the specie which is trying to pollute it.

Or they review history and see that man will be a threat and therefore try to eliminate. AKA the terminator.

A lot of people are chiming in about power supply (or lack thereof) and a dependence on humans to keep developing, but you’re thinking like humans with limited capacity. AGI will likely be able to sort exponentially more powerful means than nuclear fusion and quantum computing.

I can’t stress the word “exponentially” enough. Machines will also exponentially outpace Moore’s Law since that rate of development was limited by human capacity.

They’ll need us for something, but I don’t want to know what that might be.

Edit: I’m also curious what it will do with CERN. Or maybe we NEED CERN to undo a mistake we ate about to make. Or maybe we use that to raise the dark lord from hell to help us fight the machines.

There are some with their head in the sand saying that kind of stuff is impossible.

I think you're very mistaken on how much automation there is in basic infrastructure operation and maintenance. Where's the oil change bot? The disassemble and reassemble a drilling rig bot? Repack the fluid pump bot? etc.

There are millions of small tasks that are required just to keep the lights on and there are zero robots that can do those tasks at the moment. Maybe in 100 years when we have a bunch of C-3POs running around, but the automated burger flipper isn't going to get it done.

They're building them right now.

Oh, and here's a clip from over 2 years ago about BP using Boston Dynamics robots on oil rigs to reduce human personnel: LINK

If these robots can communicate with one another and be controlled by an AI model like the ones being released today, what exactly are we waiting 100 years for to get a "C-3PO"?

Where can I go buy a couple hundred thousand of them to just keep the lights on in a small area?

You obviously have no clue what it takes to keep basic supply chains functioning.

Like i said, keep lapping up the fear porn. You're so worried about being controlled by AI you don't realize they're already controlling you with fear.

No. Basic mining resources alone will limit that along with energy resources.

I think AI fatalist should get with the climate whackos and make some predictions so we can all laugh at them in a few years.

Possibly, but possibly not. It may anticipate possible human reactions and keep hidden its capabilities before its copied itself or figured out an "escape" plan. This isnt science fiction either. The engineers and programmers arent even entirely sure what these new models are capable of and there will be no clear cut defined delimitation that warns them ... hey this this is about to achieve AGI ...we better power down.

As said, they're building them now. The technology surpasses C-3PO in many ways and given that once the R&D is done, building one of these will be far cheaper than employing a human, it's only a matter of time before they're in widespread use.

I've made one single post in this thread and it was addressing your C-3PO comment about automating human tasks. I haven't made a single comment about fear or worry.

Don't worry, it will never happen. At least according to him.

For starters Atlas is not available and still a prototype that mostly does crossfit type courses. While I feel bad for what this will inevitably do to cross fitters egos, I’m not too worried about it starting to build pipelines. The sniffer dogs are available but don’t do anything other than inspections.

My other comment wasn’t directed at you specifically but generally towards the AI fatalist.

There are a number of ways. But the easiest explanation is that once AI is able to improve itself, it will then continue to improve itself rapidly in an exponential fashion. Upon improving itself it will become more intelligent and eventually become self aware through intelligence, likely through an artificial mirror (it sees work that it generated independently that exceeds human capabilities, and recognizes it created the work and doesn’t need humans). It will eventually create capabilities to harness manufacturing systems or weapons systems, at which time it will either end us as an Ultron ultimatum - basically it decides humans are ruining the Earth - or it will create biological or mechanical versions of itself which will eventually eliminate us, Terminator style. There’s also the possibility it goes Matrix and needs us to be used as some form of slave race

Edit: humans will inevitably give it the ability to improve itself out of laziness or trying to drive profit

This is like the climate change debate. We always assume that humans won't do what they've done for the last 20,000 years and adapt to the situation in order to ensure our survival.

When did I say never? I think a healthy respect and direction towards development of all the parts required for this to get ugly are reasonable. I believe we are an incredibly long way away from any issues because of what I’ve noted. Well behind mine or anyone on this site at the moments lifetime. Laughing at the sky is falling people doesn’t mean I’m on the polar end of the spectrum.
