If I'm going for an island fort, it's going to be one surrounded by fresh water and enough land to plant crops.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Fort Mackinac!

Situated on 150-foot bluffs above the Straits of Mackinac on Mackinac Island, this charming American Revolution-era fort has strong, time-tested stone walls which encompass an impressive 27 acres with plenty of open space for gardening and multiple buildings for storage.

The island itself is 3.77 square miles and nestled within the edge of Lake Huron just far enough away from the mainland to not be a zombie magnet. Boasting a population of just under 500 people means this little ZA getaway has plenty of resources but little competition for them. Even if the entire island goes the way of The Walking Dead one could easily take out the entire population from the comfort and safety of the fort.

An added attraction of this quiet gem is that due to its distance from the mainland and other islands, even when the lake is frozen in the winter you'll be able to see zombies or roaming bands of looters coming from far enough off to take precautions. Even if troubles persist you can easily leave and take refuge on the nearby Bois Blanc island (34sq miles of mostly wilderness with only 47 residents).

Solid choice. On a side note, I bet that was miserable as hell to build back in the day.

The greatest advantage in every Zombie situation is elevation/height. You find a super tall building, stay near the top. When they come, you get high and rig a way for them to fall (ala Zombieland 2). None of them are smart and just walk off the ledges. It'd be easy..

Good luck growing anything substantial in that soil and without a consistent supply of fresh water

If you’re just marooned there, it’s in the tropics, you would easily have enough water if you have any sort of ingenuity at all. Not to mention that you can eat fish, sea plants, etc. there’s plenty of ways to survive.

If you have time to plan you can bring soil, fruit trees, barrels of water, etc. on a bigger ship

I've been and it is spectacular. You can take a boat or plane from Key West. If you go down there, take the day to go out.

I would try to claim a prison, all the infrastructure you need is in place.

You do know that Fort Jefferson used to serve as a prison, don't you?
