Everybody I talk to about Barcelona thinks it's an amazing city

Having been to both Portugal and Spain in the last two years, I loved visiting and the only place I’d move would be Porto or Lagos, Portugal. Spain was a good bit more for everything.

I’m not moving there anytime soon, but would be a cool place to retire.

The working wage for someone in late 20s is like $25k USD. I went to a bar in Lisbon and ordered a round of drinks for some buddies I met at a hostel and all the locals looked at me like WTF are you doing you lunatic.

All that said, the locals I met there were super chill and seemed very happy.

Youth unemployment there is upwards of 20% in most places and the government of Spain is all-in on importing more Muslims from North Africa.

Salaries are terrible. Eveb professionals earn far less than in most of Western Europe or North America. Average pay after heavy taxes barely covers basics. Youth unemployment is sky-high. Most jobs are short-term contracts with no security or benefits. You work long hours for very little.

Housing is a nightmare. Rents in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and tourist areas have exploded from overtourism and foreign buyers. Locals and expats get pushed out into tiny, expensive apartments or shared flats. Buying means endless bureaucracy, high taxes, and fees. Decent places now cost tourist prices.

As someone who has never been, I was wondering, what’s the diversity of the people there? Is it one big group of native people with a few small groups of immigrants?

Make sure they know Spanish first. Or Portuguese.

Pretty diverse in the cities. Look like white cubans in the rural areas.

Ya know I don’t agree with you but we have work there and my closest coworker said the almost word for word with what you said. I think that was Navarra, Spain.

Unless you live in the hood, the only reason you wouldn't let your kids play outside is because you're a neurotic helicopter parent and your kids will grow up to be afraid of everything, and you'll be wondering why they don't want to move out of the house when they're 18.
