If everyone in America is still fed, why do we have all this surplus food?

There is a lot of food waste in America and we also export a ton of food

We’ve thrown the supply chain out of whack. Large amounts were going to institutions like schools, other supply chains were servicing restaurants.

We won't have actual food shortages - but it is probably quite difficult to alter the supply that quickly so instead of going to restaurant food suppliers it is getting routed to grocery stores and foodbanks.

The food waste in schools is disgusting.

Yeah, that. Same with schools. THEY aren’t actually wasting the food, but a shitload is getting tossed away from the people each are serving.

What restaurant do you know that scrapes food off plates back into the kitchen to be reused.

Think about that for a second.

Also, you would be surprised how much food restaurants throw out every night just from the kitchen not from customers. Yes they aren't in the business of wasting food but every restaurant does it. Food goes bad and people don't eat it all.
