shite is starting to get serious now with the wave action

I get really uneasy watching this video when the water retreats quite a bit more before the big wave comes in. Only going to get worse.

Been there several times, have photos of family at that exact spot with the buoy.

Kind of sad seeing those people there right now. They have no idea what they're in for.

Yes, there are several more southernmost points than that buoy.
quote:

The actual southernmost point in Florida (as well as in the continental United States) is actually 10 miles away at Ballast Key, a privately owned island south and west of Key West. Signs on that island strictly prohibit unauthorized visitors. Land on the Truman Annex property just west-southwest of the buoy is the true southernmost point on the island, (approximately 900 feet (270 m) farther south), but it has no marker since it is U.S. Navy property and cannot be entered by civilian tourists. The southernmost part of Key West Island accessible to civilians is the beach area of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park at approximately 24.545142 N, -81.80964 W, and approximately 500 feet (150 m) farther south than the marker. The claim on the buoy stating "90 miles to Cuba" is a rounded number, since Cuba, at its closest point is 94 statute (81 nautical) miles due south.

They probably would have open roads all the way to Miami. They may still be leaving.

It really is, 10 ft of water, to be up on a 2nd floor, ok, but the wind will be awful.

About what time will they get the worst? I guess it will be dark, we'll see how the lighting is/if the camera holds up.

This has the ominous feel of that situation on the Mississippi coast during Camille where those people had the hurricane party on the 3rd floor of their hotel and all of them got washed away. I've read accounts that day this is false and didn't happen, but it seems anyone staying at Key West has a chance to meet that fate for real.

Not really.

If the storm surge is powerful enough, that 10 ft of water could easily undercut the first floor and cause the building to collapse.

Check out this idiot on periscope in south Florida. He just said "I don't know why everyone is scared of a little wind, where is everyone at?"

I told him to write his name and social security number on his arm... he didn't like that.

Nerd Alert!
Real nerd alert: that little outhouse-looking shed next to the buoy is where the original underwater telco cable from Cuba came out of the sea and was terminated.
