Ideas for my son to start inviting his friends to our house

My son is ten and wants nothing more than to leave our house to hang with his friends. We’re very fortunate to live in a neighborhood that is small, secluded and safe, and conducive for that old school environment of kids running through yards to play outside or at each other’s houses.

It’s been great but now that my son is a little older, he has little interest in inviting his friends to our house.

I do empathize because one of his friends has a finished basement that’s dedicated to kids hanging out. It has a large screen tv for videogames and movies, a pool table, two couches, and a refrigerator. There’s also space for them to play games or build forts.

Another of his friends has a larger yard that is flat. They play whiffle ball games there.

I’m not saying we can compete with that as we don’t have a basement or a large flat yard.

But it’s been disheartening because he’s spending the majority of his weekends or free afternoons over there. We haven’t seen him hang with his friends in months.

When I ask him why he doesn’t invite them to our house, he says there’s not much to do. Also, I think having a five year old sister who tries to push her way into being in their space doesn’t help.

We have a playroom with a tv, videogames, and board games. Also some music stuff. That’s about it.

I looked into paving our parking pad and putting in a basketball goal. The best quote was $20k. Our driveway is a hill and isn’t going to work for basketball.

Anyone else go through this as a parent? Have any ideas*? Do I just have to admit we have the lame house and there’s nothing we can do?

*They’re a little young for hookers and blow.

I can spend $10k on shite to do. I should have included that in OP.

Yes, that will hurt us financially, but I’m willing to make some budget cuts for this.

Maybe your wife should invite them over and give them reason to enjoy your house and keep coming back.

If you're serious about it you have to have a dedicated hangout space available. A 120" screen with a cheap projector hooked up to an Xbox, a pool, a badass park close by, it doesn't matter.

For your situation, it sounds like the gaming den would be the easiest/cheapest to set up.

Another option if you have an open garage bay is to set up a golf Sim. My teenage daughter and her friends love mine. It was relatively cheap to diy.

That’s a good idea actually. We have a nice shed back there. Not sure what I would do with all the yard equipment and tools, but it’s an idea.

Start doing cookouts with the kids helping.. at 10 there dumb enough to fall for it be be uncool...

start with bq,, making tamales,, bread ,, make pizzas maybe invest in good outdoor pizza oven make pizza make it fun

then offer but don't pressure.. the kids will find the experience nurturing and a great chance to teach young man an important part of manhood and will make them better men , husbands ,fathers

No mater what you do at the house to get them m interested in hanging out, the 5 y/o sister will be the deterrent. You’d have to be creative and work with your son on doing something while also having the wifey take the daughter out of the house for a few hours.

Can you do a 1/2 basketball court
or pickle ball court?
