Seems incredibly strange.
Why would a hybrid equate to more actuarial risk?
More expensive to repair.. frickin Teslas are stupid to insure because they're such a pain in the arse to fix

I was thinking about it today. I wonder if there is an algorithm built in where certain people are getting strikes quicker. Like you have none, so maybe it's being more lenient on you now.
I started watching a lot of FSD videos around fall of last year, and as far as I can tell, the warnings seem pretty consistent for the same behaviors. Basically it wants you to keep your eyes open and facing the road and it warns you if you don’t.
The strikes happen when you ignore the warnings, so I think people are just trying to push it to see what happens or they’re really not paying attention. The prompts are pretty hard to miss.

Plug-in hybrid makes way more sense.

Seems like a waste of money for how little she drives but it’s your $$$ not mine baw. EV’s as a whole are novelty items.

$20K for batteries at 8 years. Plan ahead.
Teslas have been around longer than 8 years. Where are all the stories of disgruntled owners having to spend a fortune on battery replacement?

Home every night and drives 15-20 miles/day. We have a gas burner for long trips, and looking for suggestions/comments from current EV users.
I will be researching the pros/cons, so please fire away with any real life experiences.....I have rented a few on business travel, so have a grip on the basics....
TIA
I have an Ipniq 5, and it's the best, most fun vehicle that I've ever had. Highly recommend.
But, I would only get an EV if you're able to charge at home. The range anxiety on road trips is real.

I would definitely recommend talking to your insurance agent *before* you select your car and find out the difference in expense
Are there people out there that don't do this? You don't have to have an agent do it. You can check yourself on every insurance company app I've ever used

Well, my mama didn't
We are waiting on a vehicle that should be ready in March... because of my mother's experience, I have definitely been in touch with my agent and getting quotes so we won't be surprised.
This will be our first new vehicle since 2009... Have had same agent for 25yrs, I don't think I knew to check with them back then, we just insured it when we bought it. I checked this time, though!

Expensive if buying new, resale value is terrible. So great value if buying used.
Battery replacement cost is overblown. You never hear anyone talk about what it costs to replace an engine, transmission, etc. when buying an ICE vehicle. And realistically these days, no one keeps their vehicles longer than when it's time to replace the batteries anyway.
You'll go through tires way faster.
Battery/range is terrible in cold weather. Not much of an issue if you're in God's country.
Charging on the highway is improving every year in terms of availability and newer technology to allow faster charging.
Charging on the highway/road trips can be more expensive than gas. I.e. the "savings" of having an EV is from home Charging.
I truly think that we will transition from the traditional ICE to a hybrid more akin to what we see in diesel train engines. Electric motors and battery, but a "generator" of sorts to provide additional range.

I can install the 240V station.....
And resale value is a concern.....you don't see many EVs used that are trustworthy, and I don't have an EV mechanic I trust, LOL.
At the end of the day, gas cars are so damn reliable these days....you can go 200K with few problems. I do like the idea of my wife not having to fill up, keep up with oil changes, etc.....but that is also over rated.
OIL/GAS has been pretty damn good in my life, and over time EV will be good as well, needs time to develop.

Maybe. Seems like modern engines which are designed to help meet CAFE requirements have gotten worse in reliability.
See the tundra, gmc etc.

There will need to be a paradigm shift in battery technology to be anything other than a grocery getter.

If it is a car that stays local like that just get a good used fuel efficient cat.

Can you buy good warranties for EVs?
Unsure about this one.
Tesla offers and oem warranty extension, but I honestly don’t thing it’s worth it. And I wouldn’t trust any aftermarket warranty for any EV because they’re just going to hose you.

I'm on month 8 of a Tesla Model 3 Performance. 8,600 miles and I've spent a grand total of $205 on power to charge it. Zero issues thus far but it is still pretty new. The buying process through Tesla was a dream compared to the stupid car dealership model. We use the 3 row SUV ICE vehicle whenever I/we have to drive >250 miles for work or a vacation.
Home charging is a must - cheaper, more convenient and will drastically prolong your battery's health. Most power companies will send you a $250 check in the mail if you install a level 2 home charger - look into that if you do it.
ETA: Cons would be higher insurance and I've read tires wear out quicker. Tesla has won the lowest cost of ownership multiple years in a row though.

Insurance rates?
From a Tesla perspective, expect them to go up. Nothing crazy but they will go up. This is due to how expensive their parts have been historically (although I think that’s changing) so maybe not true for other EVs.
Has Tesla fixed it's after the sale issues? There have been plenty of examples in the recent past of several month waits for body panels and such which will negatively impact insurance rates as they have to factor in rental cars while your hooptie is sitting in the shop.

quote:The amount of improvement in just 8 months in Tesla's FSD is insane. When I got the car, I used the FSD trial pretty sparingly and had to take over a few times on the interstate. Elon sent out another free trial in January and I used it to drive ~200 miles to Lake Charles and didn't have to touch the wheel once. Absolutely amazing technology.
I want self driving, not necessarily EV. The true full self driving vehicles like FSD enabled Teslas are incredible, and much safer than your average driver

quote:Level 2 charger from Tesla was $400 last year. Can probably get them cheaper 2nd hand. My electrician charged me $250 to install it. GTFO with the $2k-$3k install number
2) $2-$3k to install charging station at house (believe there are some rebates/sell incentives to save if cost)
