If you look at the history of slavery in the South, it only helped the rich and hurt the poor. Free labor meant the poor whites had no leverage. However, the rich knew this and had an active propaganda machine telling the poor that slavery helped them. I think it carries over to today.
In addition, people tend to look for someone to blame for their own faults. Rich people don't need to play the blame game as much but poor whites try and find someone to blame and guess who gets the blame? Much like many poor black people blame their situation on "the man" whether it's justified or not (I do believe institutional racism still exists so I'm not claiming "the man" isn't a problem, just not the sole cause).
The flag is seen as a symbol of a romanticized time when all whites had a better life, even though it's just not true.
The flag doesn't really bother me all that much but I just don't see the point in flying it at this time, especially if the person is solely using the "muh heritage" argument. My great-great grandfather was high up in the Washington Artillery in the Civil War and started the Confederate museum in New Orleans. I'm definitely not embarrassed to be a relative of his, even if I don't agree with his views. However, I'm not going to deify him either, because he was on the side of history.

Here's my take on the flag(it's not original but it's the most logical to me and many others):
Sure the flag represents the Southern Pride and Heritage and is relatively non-offensive in that context. But....

Since the end of the Civil War when the Klan was founded, the decent Southern Folks stood by and did absolutely NOTHING as the KKK openly waved that same flag as a symbol of solidarity among Klan Chapters across the country(not just in the south).

Thank your local Klan Leaders for ruining your Rebel Flag Party.

Silly Example:
How would we feel is a Far-Right Militant White Supremacy Cult in Montana began using the LSU colors and logo in their recruitment propaganda. You go to their site and this is there and their motto is Lets Stand Up(LSU).


Aside from LSU suing them, I think a TON of alumni, staff, boosters, fans etc would be outraged to be associated with such nutjobs.
See where I'm going with this silly example? Southern Governors and leaders stood by idly while the Klan destroyed the flag's original meaning and legacy.

The heritage argument was a propaganda campaign started by the Daughters of the Confederacy around the 1920's. That's around the time all the Confederate statues in the South started going up. It's where the Lost Cause and state's rights romanticism started.

They were a very, very small minority and basically had no power to do anything about it. By the 40's and 50's the Klan had penetrated the local governments across the South, and many local sheriffs, mayors, judges, city councilors, etc. were active Klan members. And even the ones that weren't were sympathetic to their cause.

It's embarrassing when I hear that. I think after the media's campaign against the flag and all the hate southerners got from all across the country I can understand a young teenager with a frick you mentality flying it just to piss those people off. During different times of my life and I'm late 30s there's been people who have come after southerners from across the country. I mean shite, we even get bashed on here occasionally

There are the racist, but there is also the frick you white liberal from up north and out west mind set that goes along with it. I think overall black people see it and shake their heads and just avoid those people, or just say to themselves how redneck they are. White folks from up north and out west will lose their shite for a year over it when they see it. They'll even start campaigns and protests Even though whites from up north and out west hate blacks more than anyone else on the globe.

Now me, the only rebel flags I got are pictures in my Civil War books

No. The Confederate Flag underwent a transition in perception from Heritage to Hate by the end of the 20th Century. The reason for this is access to digital media.
The Internet and DVD Documentaries provided millions of hs and college kids a portal to not only learn about but to SEE the Civil Rights Era.
The Confederate Flag is in damned-near in every clash/protest/klan rally on film.

Remember when LSU Colored Confederate Battle Flags were visible everywhere on Game Day in the 70s-80s? They were disappearing rapidly from the stands well before 2000. I think the protests came about 6 yrs later.
