"Night Shift" by Stephen King.
I have to say that King wrote a lot better during his coked-up years.

Bernard Cornwell's Warrior Chronicles is fantastic historical fiction based in 9th C. England. Also has a show on BBC right now.
How the West Won by Rodney Stark. A politically incorrect historical analysis of why the west is superior to other cultures in so many ways.

"11/22/63" by Stephen King. I don't usually read books, but this has everything in there that I quoted from your OP. I guess the only negative is that this book is fricking long as shite, but I enjoyed it a lot.

I see you're an Alabama fan (won't hold that against you). That being said, not sure how much of a true connection you might have to New Orleans. But, if you have any at all, Dr Mary's Monkey is an enjoyable read. I think it's probably better enjoyed by those who have at least a small amount of knowledge of the geographic layout of the city, but probably a good read for anyone imo.

Recently read Logevall's "Embers of War" which was the most comprehensive book I've ever read on the Western Power's struggle in Vietnam. Really good.

Awesome book. Anything by Erik Larson and anything by Nathaniel Philbrick is a winner.

War as they knew it by Michael Rosenberg. The story of the Michigan Ohio state rivalry and most importantly the 10 year war between Bo and Woody set to the backdrop of America in crisis in the 60s and 70s and how these two totalitarian leaders handled college kids during that time. Football, history, war all rolled into one and it's written superbly
