rent a p.a. made up of 2 speakers, a powered mixer with cables to attach an ipod or other 1/8" input. you can run it off of a small generator or even an inverter hooked to the truck battery. i saw one in the mid-city parade that was plenty loud enough and he was pulling 500 watts on a 1,000 watt inverter. most music stores have rental equipment.
strap a 2x12 across the bed rails and ratchet-strap the speakers to it.
get 50 gal trash bags to cover the speakers if it rains.

Also, don't get a guitar amp since they have limited frequency response and they aren't designed to reproduce accurately sound, they are as much of the voicing of the guitar as the guitar itself. Most guitar speaker drivers are anything but flat.
The local rental places should have something similar to the cheap Behringer I mentioned though they will likely carry higher quality stuff. The issue you need to be keen on is connecting the source to the inputs of the powered speaker. Many if not most only have balanced inputs ( TRS or XLR) so you will need to whip up a adaptor cable (I assume you are good with a soldering iron since you mentioned working on a friends valve amp) or buy the one you need.

I think two of these could work if you weren't looking to spend a lot. I have one and it can get pretty damn loud. With my phone volume all the way up I am usually at about 10% on volume level on the speaker itself for outdoor personal events. You can BT or plug directly in. It requires power.
Edit: I believe Costco may sell them as well.

aren't you going to need a pre-amp, or mixer? i don't think an ipod/phone/etc. will have enough signal for the speakers and i would be concerned that the speaker amps will clip.

Bought a Behringer B110D 300W powered speaker. Got 10’ 1/4 to 1/8 TSR cable so I can run the music from the front seat.
