I heard the Memphis police department lowered the standards because they were desperate
Posted by Byrdybyrd05 on 1/30/23 at 8:21 pm

I heard that after the George Floyd protests of 2020, Memphis was desperate to hire police officers as the good ones retired. They were in bad need of police that they offered a $15K signing bonus, got rid of having a associate degree or having 54 hours of credits, only needed 5 years of work experience, and a waiver if you are a convicted felon.
Are other cities doing the same thing?

Oh you heard that? That's pretty much every police department right now dude.

It wouldn't surprise me. Cops are scarcer these days. You either have to lower the standards, pay them way more, or both.

waver if you are a convicted felon.
How does this work when convicted felons can't carry guns?

Yeah man, Memphis was a place of peace and harmony until 2020 when all the "good" ones retired.
Pretty sure you mean waiver.

If you saw any of those videos released this weekend, it’s readily apparent that they waived the standard that a cop has to be able to walk 100 feet without keeling over out of breath.

I keep hearing that these dudes might be in the Vice Lord's gang, but that sounds like a bunch of internet speculation

Only one of the officers, Tadarius Bean, began working in law enforcement in 2020.
One other joined the Memphis police in 2020, but was a corrections officer for almost a decade prior.
The other three joined in 2018 or earlier.

All but a one or two of the Memphis cops were hired prior to George Floyd. However, this is happening all over the country. It’s best to just not think too much about who is applying to work for BRPD and NOPD in 2023.

I’d imagine BRPD is in the same situation. The felony waiver I’m not sure about, but there’s definitely cops with misdemeanors in that department.

I wasn’t implying that the 5 police officers that were arrested for murder were the result of this but just how low they lowered the standards to be an officer now.

quote:I'm not sure if this was the practice before all the George Floyd stuff but I did see here in SD a while back they were offering a $50k (iirc) signing bonus.
They were in bad need of police that they offered a $15K signing bonus
They were advertising it on billboards, which seems desperate for a PD to do.
I would add that it seems the standards for being a LEO were never that high. These things have been happening forever. We're just seeing it more now bc cameras being everywhere has made it more available to anyone with the ability to get on the interwebz or turn on a tv. Maybe in specialized areas of LE, but your every day cop most likely only has a high school diploma. And there's nothing wrong with that, but we have to wonder if these are the people we want enforcing our laws and having the power that comes along with it.
I'd imagine many of these instances that have gotten a lot of attention could have been avoided had there been 1 person there with a brain who wasn't strictly running off adrenaline and said "let's slow things down a bit now that there's 30 of us holding this one guy down. Maybe it's not good to have our knee in someone's neck for 10 mins. Maybe it's not good to taze someone 7 times in a row while holding them down and maybe it's not a good idea to beat the life out of someone while holding them down - you know, the whole 'stop resisting' while 5 officers are holding someone down really isn't fooling anyone now that we have body cams."
Just saying, stupid people do stupid things and there are a lot of stupid LEOs out there, just as there are a lot of stupid people in most professions.

Or, in places like New Orleans, allow them to do their job and have a DA that prosecutes. Lot's of good cops have left the force in every city because thugs are allowed to be thugs without any fear. All the changes in policies in the last few years have only ran off good officers and forced lower standards to attract less quality. Things weren't perfect 3-5 years ago, with the rare cases of police brutality, but the over exaggeration of it has made things way worse. The rare case of brutality still exists, but quality police work has suffered drastically.

Biden and the rest of the politicos that want to destroy this country are happy about this.
