FEMA gives them up to 33k you dumb frick.

I'm donating, but not to someone who OPTED out of coverage. There a too many people that are in zones labelled non-flood that had no clue it was needed. Can't give to everyone, gotta choose somehow

Please stop with the no one is covering this disaster bullshite. Every major news outlet is giving coverage.
No dipshit, what they're referring to is that Assholes shipped in to stir up the locals during police protests got way more coverage than that same community lending hands to each other in the face of a huge natural disaster. Please stop with YOUR bullshite.

I'm doing one now as we speak for my parents. Was waiting until I knew for sure if they lost their home or not.

But...I live in AZ. My other brother lives in CA...so we have lots of friends and people we know out here that don't have anyone else they know affected here in LA. I've been busy doing other stuff today first and have already had 3 people that live in AZ ask me about a gofundme.

Blast me all you want...I'm just doing whatever I can to help my family out right now. I can't be there with them to clean up....at least I can do this for them.

They only one I've seen was setup by a friend of a single mom who is working her way though nursing school. She was in the middle of a 16 hr shift at the hospital when her house flooded. So she literally didn't get anything out.

As you should. I'm sure you and your brother's friends who are inclined to help financially would much rather contribute to the family of someone they know, rather than to a massive organization with large overhead and marketing expenses. Your friends will get a better bang for their buck and have the satisfaction of knowing who they actually helped. Sounds like a winning formula to me.

Carry on, and do not feel obligated to explain yourself to the assholes of the world.

There should be no need for a gofundme if you have insurance.

Insurance=the original gofundme.

Nobody has ever been screwed by an insurance company before?

I don't know why her parents didn't have flood insurance. Maybe they're in an area "that never floods", maybe they're on a very tight budget. What difference does it make to you? Don't contribute if you don't think its a worthy cause.

Nurse's parents aren't the only people in south LA who didn't have flood insurance and harassing them now isn't helping anyone.

Bamacoaster, this flooding was so much higher than could have ever been reasonably predicted. I personally many, many people who got 4+ feet and were > 10 feet above the area flood lines. These people were not required to purchase flood coverage. And I can tell you from personal experience, often times the purchase of an "unnecessary" policy is dissuaded at closing, your average joe generally relies upon the re agents, bankers & closing agents who should know better

Try youcaring.com. It has lower fees than gofundme. It also uses paypal which I think if someone is making a direct donation through a bank account it is no fee vs with a credit card.

Good to know, thank you. I already started the gofundme before I read your post.

ETA: My parents are very poor.....like living off social security as their only retirement poor....the cost of flood insurance in a non flood zone was likely something my dad didn't think he needed to pay. $400-500 a year is a lot to people like my parents.

If it makes you feel better though...if he does receive any FEMA aid he will always be required from here on out to have flood insurance. Doesn't matter though....cause whether they rebuild or relocate...I will make sure they have flood insurance in the future.
