They say this is the happiest place on Earth

They say that but they ain't ever been in the parking lot at opening time and heard all of the kids crying like they were being loaded onto boxcars for the trip to Auschwitz. Thats in the morning. Closing time is even worse....thats when those same kids are screaming but mama and daddy have had a belly full of bullshite all day and are past the point of giving even a little bit of a frick what they say or how they behave. I was outside the gates of the prison where they used to electrocute people in Georgia once on execution night...the atmosphere was more festive there than anywhere near Orlando that I have ever been....on the anti-death penalty side of the road....happiest place on earth my arse.

I have a strong dislike for Disney for multiple reasons. I was hesitant to go this past year, but I will give it a positive review. The guardians of the galaxy ride was amazing. The new Star Wars stuff was really cool too.

Expensive yes, but once I got over that I enjoyed myself.

Disney costs as much as most of these trips.

Go fly a family of 4 to Paris for 7 days and get back to me with this shite. I just did it 2 years ago. Just flights were a little over $2500. Total cost of that trip was over $10k.

Riiiiight. Girls totes regret being taken to Disney World when they're children.
People that make comments like this fall into the category of "never take vacations or go on one every 5-10 years." My girls have been all over the place and we still go to Disney 2-3 times a year. It doesn't have to be either/or.

It's such a common tactic for people to comprehend things. Put something in a box, divide it up and pick a side. Life thrives in the grey area but people constantly push, desire and want black or white.

My daughter is 14 and has been to WDW more times than years she's been alive.

She's also been to Hawaii, England, on Safari in South Africa, Paris, Philippines, she's seen the grand canyon, she's hiked with me in Sedona, seen multiple plays on Broadway, seen multiple plays off broadway in Seattle and Washington DC, she's walked across the Miss River at Lake Itasca, she's been to the Indianpolis 500, the Louisville Slugger factory, been ATV riding in Chattanooga, been horseback riding in Estes Park, snow skiing in Park City, fed the tarpon at Robbie's in the Keys, been on probably ten cruises.

We invest in travel way more than alot of other people but it's not like it has to be Disney or something else...it can and should be both.

I will accept that. I became a father relatively late in life...34. Taking a young family to Disney at 28 I suspect is a different experience than doing it at 40.

That said I remember going when I was 9, in the summer of 1975 (summer being the operative word) and we drove down for the day from Daytona.... not the ideal way to visit the happiest place on earth. This was back in the day when they sold packages of tickets for rides and shows and you used them as you saw fit. Of course we bought the cheapest package because it was 1975 and even if you had some money you didn't buy the premium package because being inside the park was good enough for most middle class families.

The day before we had all gotten our base layer of sunburn that was a requirement for a Florida vacation in the 70s...sunblock was for wimps and a good base layer of second degree burns was erroneously believed to be all the protection anyone who wasn't a sissy needed to whup the sun. We also thought a deep brown tan over all but the most sensitive parts of our anatomy was healthy...imagine our shock when skin cancer was discovered in the late 80s (I know, I know, it was way before that but no one believed it was real LOL).

Anyway were all suffering from a serious health condition on top of having stayed at the boardwalk until about midnight because mama and daddy had a taste for Miller Lite and it was $.50 a cup. Being us we meant to be at the park when it opened and stay until they ran us out....to get our money's worth. This meant leaving the motel at about 5 am.

Imagine 2 hung over adults, both suffering from second degree burns over most of their bodies, and 3 equally burnt children on 4 hours of fitful sleep and a 90 minute drive in an un-airconditioned 2 door Nova. Add to this the fact that this entire week long vacation probably set us back all of about $150....it wasn't what one would call luxurious but it was good enough for us...and it may well be that my Disney experiences are slightly different than that of most people. We would have all been happier swimming in the tepid and questionable water of the $14 a day motel and working on our sunburn.

I have since done Disney properly. On property resort, spent money like a drunken sailor....but when we spent $500 for our 5 year old daughter to have her hair done and get dressed up like Cinderella at the Bippity Boppity Boutique I, and this was only me because my wife and daughter thought the boutique was about the best thing to come along sine sliced bread, realized I just ain't a Disney person.....

3 of us are going to London and Paris from 12/30/24 - 1/4/2025 because our daughter, who will travel with the band, is marching in a New Years Day Parade in London. It cost us just under $5000 for her to travel with the band. The rest of us, myself, my wife and our son, are going on our own and not counting eating, something we would do at home, the trip has cost us less than $3300. If our daughter were going with us instead of the band we would be slightly over $3600.

The last time we went to Disney (2015) there were the 4 of us. We stayed 7 days at Shades of Green (on property military resort....very nice if you have access, way less than Disney on property resorts). We flew from El Paso. Spirit Airlines. All in that trip cost us right at $10K.

We are going to Honolulu for 2 weeks in April/May 2025. Have an apartment booked and have booked airfare. So far we are at $5700. Might've waited on airfare and saved a little or a lot but she who must be obeyed found non-stop flights from Atlanta for less than $800 a piece so she booked it. Getting there and staying there is not bad....eating and doing anything is damned expensive. I suspect all in we will spend about $10-12K

Its possible to do Disney on the cheap...my wife took our Daughter (12), niece (30) and niece's daughter (5) 2 years ago for the day (from Daytona) and they spent about $1000. All four of them swore they would never do it again if someone paid them to do it. Happiest place on earth my arse. Most expensive? Right up there. Happiest? Not even close....

Currently wrapping up a long road trip that took my wife and I through Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah and I can't agree more.

Idaho was one of the most beautiful states I've ever visited.

Seriously, if you have young kids and are in Orlando, Gator Land is infinitely more enjoyable than Disney. Both our kids and our grandbaby (actually niece's daughter but she is like a daughter to us so her daughter is like a grandbaby) will all tell anyone who cares to listen that if they were 5 years old and had a choice between Disney and Gator Land Gator Land wins hands down...if they have been to Disney. If not of course Disney will win out because of the dream of Disney. Kids LOVE them some Gator Land in my experience. It is cheesy as hell and therein lies the attraction....you know EXACTLY what you are getting yourself into, there is no pretense at all. Kids LOVE to watch Alligators jumping out of the water to eat a piece of chicken....and 4-5 hours and about $250 you are done and leaving. It is perfect for young kids. I don't know if it is still open...if not its a shame....

Way off topic but the best "amusement park" on the planet for families with kids of any age, in my opinion, is Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels Texas. It is CHEAP....$110 and you can go every day from May to September....and they will let you bring a cooler slap full of cold drinks (no outside alcohol) and a car load of food if you want to tote it in the place. $45 a day for single day tickets. Free parking best I remember. It is crowded as hell but it flows perfectly, almost no standing around doing nothing...and the crowd is always happy as hell. We have been a bunch....we have friends in the area....and I have yet to see Karen ranting and raving about anything. I am sure it happens but its rare. If you had a swimming hole nearby as a kid you know the vibe....its on steroids with the crowd but it is familiar. It is a great experience.

Depends on how much your kids enjoy it. Watching their faces as they interact with the characters at a young age was worth it to me. It is not about the food.

I have been and it is not nearly as nice as you make it sound. Between this and "Gator Land" I am guessing you may be a redneck. Schlitterbahn was pretty good in the morning, but as the day went on, the smell of the water after crowds had increased was disgusting, especially the wave pool. We have never gone back.

I am a redneck. White trash Appalachian redneck. As if there is something wrong with that? Also a cheap bastard. What's wrong with being a redneck?

I did not, however, say I liked Gatorland...I said young kids, in my experience, do....my kids loved it when they were about 5 or so. There were a heap of kids there every time we were there and by all outward appearances they seemed to be enjoying themselves....

I have been to Schlitterbahn a bunch and as far as amusement parks goes it is, in my opinion, one of the best for families. Its cheap and fun...so what if the water smells? Its fed from a river....it is constantly changing, not just being filtered and chlorinated, its probably cleaner than any swimming pool ever has been. If not thats what immune systems are for. If you swim anywhere but a private lake or pool that only you use there is a good chance you are swimming in someone else's piss....
