well yeah, most "normal" youth tournaments are a ton of fun for the families.

It's the travel ball crazies that change things.

I watched a supercoach and all his baserunning signals run himself out of a big inning yesterday. That was fun.

Dear diary,

Today was a good day.

Suck some Pecker, GTG.
There are some parents on the OT who like to share/laugh/empathize with other parents.

I was balls deep in Singing and Dancing Talent Competition all weekend and can relate as it's Another potential parental nightmare.

OP, where was your tournament?

You people think Travel ball parents are bad?

I think girls in general suck way worse than boys' events. I'm fricked.

Attaboy. Is it weird that we want our son's to experience a little adversity and respond? Like life's natural lessons?

Yea I had some friends at Traction over weekend. Did they really charge $6 a head during mid-week For going to your kid's practice if another game was going on? Saw that on the Facebook.

No just for tournament days. He practices and plays there in their league and it's free entry all other times.

Yeah I can agree with what you're saying about the adversity. Honestly, they are getting plenty of it this year. I love the response though, they still have fun they just keep trying harder and harder. He's becoming more focused naturally, finally.

Gotcha. This friend posting about that is kinda tarded sometimes. I knew that didn't seem right unless there was a tournament going on.

Coach sends his kid to the plate to take the first pitch. After the first pitch he had the kid switch around to the other side. Now the super coach, standing in the 3rd base box says "hey ump, my batter can't do that it's and automatic out".

Which organization was this tournament under? Under MLB (OBR), NCAA and High School rules, a batter may switch sides of the plate BETWEEN pitches, but not during the pitch. So, depending on the exact details, your SuperCoach may have been wrong anyway.

I'd have to look up the rule but I believe that it's legal with less than two strikes.

Super coach tricked the umpire. Super coach is also a dick wad but that's not surprising.

ETA: Would need to know what rules they use but it appears that switching sides of the plate is OK at any point (regardless of number of strikes) as long as the pitcher isn't ready to pitch.

According to Traction's website, they play under USSSA which uses MLB rules slightly modified. There is no modification for this rule therefore switching side by a batter BETWEEN pitches is legal. As you stated, as long as the pitcher is not "ready to pitch". Basically, if the pitcher is off the rubber, the batter can change sides.

This wasn't at Traction.

And I believe you are correct. I wasn't paying attention when this originally happened, so I was hearing explanations of what the discussions were out on the field. Now that you mention it, I do recall commenting, "I believe a player can switch sides of the plate unless there are two strikes." I think the answer came that he switched during the pitch.

Great point.

This is such a douche move. The younger players cannot be expected to enforce the unwritten rules of baseball. This is only possible because most of the coaches won't tell their pitcher to ear hole the next batter (they shouldn't do that of course) or tell the base runner to slide with spikes high.

That leads the douche coaches to take advantage of shite like this.

I can't stand this part of what youth baseball has come.

We had a 1st baseman blocking the base when our runner was trying to return to the bag on a pick off attempt. These were 11 year olds. The other coach knew that we wouldn't tell our player to cleat or plow through the fielder so there was really nothing that could be done except ask the umpire to keep an eye on it. We all know what would happen to that 1st baseman in MLB. He or one of his teammates would get beaned or spiked.

I won't let me son play for coaches who treat the game that way.

In my very limited experience, I thought the travel ball parents were amazingly well behaved compared to rec ball.

I have a rec team this year where every parent said something similar to "little Johnny is not going to be your shortstop or pitcher or third basemen" I was terrified at the thought of how bad we may be, but really refreshed at the acceptance of true ability. I will say that the kids are really pretty solid though, no superstars, but some really good kids that listen and take instruction.

I have a swimmer. When my daughter first got into it and we were at a small meet, I told my wife that "This is great. Its just every swimmer against the clock. No drama because coach doesnt play them, no referees making bad calls."

Boy was I wrong. At the state championships a few weeks ago, one of my daughter's older teammate edged out another swimmer for 3rd/4th place in the 100 free. The medal stand. The 4th place parent made a scene trying to get the 3rd place swimmer disqualified for illegal stroke.

Keep in mind, that freestyle swimming is typically faster than breast and butterfly, so someone using the butterfly to gain an advantage in freestyle is not really a thing.

Anyhow, this parent had to be constrained by coaches. She soon left the natatorium very loudly and with four letter words.

But every swim meet is full of parents that think their 7 year old is destined for the Olympics, and when they finish 7th in a race in Mississippi, its someone else's fault.

Should be, yes. Was? No. It's only a foul if the umpire says it was. These are amateur umps so they don't catch everything and most don't really understand the rules in detail.

Question... My kid is 8. If he's making a run for home, and the other team has their catcher on the plate waiting on the throw, can Lil man do a fournette truck move?

I've kind of inwardly been hoping to see that

Nope. That's the sad part. He has to make every effort to avoid a collision. It sucks but it's that way and therefore catchers are being taught to be dicks without any fear of the consequences of being a dick.
