Should be, yes. Was? No. It's only a foul if the umpire says it was. These are amateur umps so they don't catch everything and most don't really understand the rules in detail.
Very true. The tough part is trying to figure out if the kid is blocking first base on purpose because his coach taught him that, or if he just doesn't know any better.
Another pet peeve of mine is that umpires between innings don't really pay attention to the on deck hitters while the pitcher is warming up. Those kids will stand basically in the dirt timing up the pitcher as he warms up while the umpires don't pay attention. As you said before, in college or professional leagues a batter wouldn't dare stand there because pitchers would take it into their own hands (research Wichita State controversy), but umpires should keep the kids back because the kids don't know any better (nor most of the coaches).

Not where my kids play. That's an ejection at that age level.

We had a 1st baseman blocking the base when our runner was trying to return
wouldn't this be classic interference?
Should be, but many officials will debate what is and what isn't interference on a pick off play like that. Personally, I'd instruct the runner to go back in standing up, preferably with a knee up in the groin area, or to the side of the first basemen's leg. Or, if you are timid about causing a little pain, simply go into the base on the inside corner, that way it makes it almost impossible to catch the ball.
Bottom line is the fielder cannot block access to the base without the ball in possession.

It's strange how that wild warm up pitch will cure the timing issue isn't it.
Baseball was made to police itself. I love the game because of that. There are consequences for being a dick. It's like mouthing off that one guy that didn't mind busting your nose. Most kids learn that mouthing off has consequences and at least consider if the mouthing off is worth it after that first bloody nose.
Baseball works the same way except for youth baseball when you have dick coaches taking advantage of the "unwritten rules".
Little shits are now posing and bat flipping after home runs because they know the next batter won't get ear holed.

At least fisting only lasts a short while(i think). these kiddee tournaments kill a whole weekend.
