I got an Old Smokey for Father's Day.

I had mentioned that I wanted to go back to cooking on charcoal occasionally (I have a gas grill and an electric smoker). Wife and kids got me this.
I read up on these things. The design hasn't changed in over 100 years. Very popular in Texas, where it's made.
Anybody got one? Any tips?

Used to have one. There's nothing wasted on that pit. The screws that hold the legs on also hold up the grill. No frills, pretty perfect if you just want some charcoal cookin. I don't think I'd try to do a 10 hr smoke or anything, but it's a good pit for the basics.

My buddy had one in college for tailgating. I think there great for doing a few burgers and sausages.

Had one years ago. It was a great grill/smoker. You can smoke whole chickens on it easily because of the spacious top. The only bad thing I can remember was it's hard to get a good sear on a steak because the grill sits up so high from the charcoal. I'm sure you could add lower grill brackets to it though.

I have had one of those for a long time. There great for cooking pork chops, sausage, and chicken. Just dump out the used coals and keep it out of the weather and it will last a long time. You can usually find replacement parts at academy too.

Cook on mine occasionally and had it since 1994.
Academy use to sell the wood chunks and I cooked chicken and pork on it.
Moved a temp guage closer to the grill rack to tell temp closer to the food.
Simple design and easy to use.

We had one of those in our RV for the last 10+ years. It's only use was for grilling while tailgating. Worked great. We would always leave it outside over night because it usually had hot coals. After the aTm game this year someone stole Ole Smokey. Thanks for the memories.

We have one at the camp. Not sure now old it is but it’s up there. It’s perfect for a few hamburgers or sausage links.

They're hard to beat. Maybe impossible when you consider cost. I've done everything from hot dogs to smoking whole chickens on mine.

Phenomenal for smoking a pork butt. Charcoal with cherry or hickory chunks. Put the charcoal over to one side, the pork over to the other. Leave the lid cracked. Low and slow.
