The amount of hate that ‘travel ball’ gets on the OT is fricking absurd

I can probably think of 10-12 people who’s kids currently do travel ball or use to. None of them thought their kids were gonna be playing in college and none of them tried to sell us stuff or constantly talked about travel ball. OTOH I know 2 young men who never played travel ball and went to play baseball in college.

I won't do it for fear of banland and because I know they post here, but I could easily link two friends facebook accounts that would prove this.

It's actually the social life of many of these parents.

it absolutely is. I went to a BBQ and that's all they could talk about. They get monogramed Yeti Tumblers and wear their travel ball team gear everywhere.

My son did it for one year and we made some good friends, but they treat the travel ball like a religion almost. The father's lives seemed to revolve around it.

But why does this bother you?

Not debatable. You would have to make 12 to 14 percent on the 529 every year to come close to matching a scholarship at a top school. Doubt that is going to happen.

Really? Starting in 2002 with $1,000 if you invested in a relatively non aggressive balanced fund like FBALX, $5K a year, in 2019 you'd have over $200K. And that's WITH the market crash of 2008.

LINK

If you started in say 2011 when the kid is 9 you'd have $80K which would be a little short probably but still not bad. Although, I admit 2011 to now was a strong bull market and doesn't necessarily reflect what you'd make going forward. To me it's still a better investment though than hoping your kid gets a scholly for athletics.

Better teach your kids to be nice to the nerds, eventually they will be working for one.

Nerds get good jobs, but they are rarely the owners...or even at the executive level. They’re the worker bees.

because the argument being proposed in this thread suggests it is simply for the betterment and enjoyment of the children. Life should not revolve around the ballpark, the soccer field, etc... It most definitely is the parents living vicariously through their children and being able to brag about a silver finish at random tournament x on Facebook.

I guess my point was that I’ve been around baseball my whole life and the truth (IMO, of course) is that the stereotype that gets perpetuated on the OT is really just the extreme, and not the norm for people involved with travel ball

Ok...so are you feeling a little left out in this or struggling to fit in with these social groups you want to be part of?

Maybe come up with a list of things you are interested in and maybe you can find a common interest to help you fit in.

Or maybe find other friends that share the same interests as you.

Just trying to help.

It's hard to live vicariously through your child when you're investing in an ESA.

As I said earlier, how much money your school fund earns is really a moot point, you could put the the money in your mattress and still be better off than spending it on travel ball as an investment considering the odds of getting a baseball scholarship of any type are less than 2%.

Lol at the notion that it’s poors that are jealous. In my experience, usually the hard core travel ball types are usually lower to middle class types severely overextended with huge car payments on giant SUVs and little to no savings.

The wealthy get rich by not wasting money on weekly hotel trips to shitty towns to watch Kayden win a meaningless tournament that only benefits the organizers and con artists that sell over priced gear
