For reference, the 89 Ford Ranger had 140 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque

For comparison, the 2025 Ranger has base 270hp (up to 405), and 310 lb-ft of torque (up to 430)

Nobody is clamoring to go back to 140hp girlie engines with less torque than a Hyundai Sonata.

Wrong.

You think people want to go back to 140-hp shitboxes? That are overall less reliable?

The 80s was a particularly shitty decade for cars.

Well, it’s SFP. So that’s a given. He’s so high on the smell of his own farts he’s lost all self awareness.

mechanics are doing good to be middle class. Most aren't even there. A mechanic making 100k /yr is at the top of the game.

Yep. I know when our mechanics start troubleshooting a machine, instead of grabbing wrenches, they’re first reaching for their laptop to hook up to the machine’s ECM which will tell them what’s wrong. Those are earthmoving machines. I’m sure automobiles are very much the same.

there are still daily driver 80s vehicles on the road that aren't restored. That absolutely won't be the case for 2020 cars 40 years from now.

Maybe the ones working at the local Express Oil Change. But if they work for a dealership, especially if they’ve had factory training, they’re making at least decent middle class money. One of my neighbors has been a mechanic at the Land Rover dealership in Bham for probably 20 years or more. Don’t know exactly what he makes, but they’re not hurting for money from what I can see.

I’ve worked in the earthmoving equipment industry for over 30 years, though I’ve never been a mechanic. I do know though that a field service mechanic can expect to make well over 100K a year. Now they’ll have to work their arse off in the heat, cold, rain, mud, etc for 50+ hours a week. But they make damn good money.

Better money than you make asking people if they want to super size their Big Mac combo.

That’s what I made when I was 25 sitting in an office with 5 weeks of PTO

A good field service mechanic can clear $200k these days and be home more weekends than not.

Yet the the mechanics at the dealership get all that done without all the drama and expletives. His conclusions about the vehicle may be correct, but it sounds more like he’s just not that good at his job.
