I am not a carpenter

Tried to build a shelf. I was probably 75% done. Wood was cut, sanded, and some of it screwed together. But as is always the case, it was looking shitty, mediocre at best. I stripped one too many screws (always fricking happens) and got one too many looks from my girlfriend.
I lost my shite and began to pry boards apart. Those that were well attached were on the receiving end of my saw. I threw the remnants in the garbage. I took a broom, swept up the mess, then promptly snapped it over the side of the garbage can. Threw tools in the garage and went the frick inside.
My grandfather was a carpenter. Alas, I have disappointed him.

YouTube is great for this sort of thing. Also, it's great to do small cheap projects that dont matter if you screw them up. You learn from it.

If you pre-drill the holes with a drill bit a size smaller than your screws, you will not split the wood or strip the screw heads.

Your grandfather probably behaved like a grown man instead of a like a child throwing a tantrum. The key to carpentry is patience and good tools. I doubt you have either.
