I-10 bridge makes its way to D.C

A new six-lane Interstate 10 Calcasieu River bridge is an example of a project that state officials said could benefit the most from President Donald Trump’s proposed $200 billion infrastructure plan.

Trump and other federal staff discussed infrastructure needs with Gov. John Bel Edwards and governors from seven other states in Washington, D.C. on Monday.

Shawn Wilson, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, said the age of the existing I-10 bridge, coupled with the growing economic development in Southwest Louisiana, are two factors that could help the project benefit from the proposal.

Louisiana has a $13 billion backlog of road and bridge improvement projects.

Carbo said rural areas of the state could benefit the most from a $50 billion block grant program in Trump’s infrastructure plan. Wilson said governors could award the money to various rural projects including ports, rail, bridge and road improvements.

The bigger challenge, Carbo said, is coming up with enough matching state money to draw down federal dollars for key infrastructure projects.

Why does bridge need to be a highrise?

Nothing taller than a barge uses that waterway

That's good. They said they were going to replace it in 1960.

Would be great to see roadway/bridge projects not take a decade to complete

so you want to limit potential land that could be used buy new port investors with a low level bridge? Smart.

Does anything other than barges pass under the current bridge?

The channel is very narrow north of the bridge.

Ive wondered that too. I get tense everytime i go over it

I have to think if its as close to collapsing as everyone says, someone would have done something about it by now or it would have collapsed already

Federal money will be available to replace the I-10 bridge at Lake Charles. The issue is the state matching the funds needed to do it.

Lake Charles is the fifth-largest metro in the state, and all of the larger metros have their own needs, such as a new bridge for Baton Rouge, or I-49 through Lafayette.

Lake Charles doesn't have the political clout statewide to sway enough legislators to dedicate funding to replace the bridge.

The new bridge will not have to be nearly as high, as boat traffic there isn't what the current bridge was built to anticipate. But, there are numerous issues to contend with to replace that bridge, which we can get to in later posts, if anyone's interested.

THere are at least three docks north of bridge, friend ships, SASOL 's temp dock, and the retired naval boat I'm drawing a blank on.

Namely, they have to figure out how to build a 6 lane wide bridge while keeping the existing 4 lane bridge open for traffic and threading the line between railroad tracks, large businesses, and refineries.

IMO this is the second biggest infrastructure need in the state behind the I-10 widening in Baton Rouge. It needs funding.
