eight-year-old home with the Goodman it's been flawless except for the drain pan being installed improperly but that was fixed.
And the outside compressor sounds like a diesel.

I installed a Goodman myself for 1/4 of the price quoted by an hvac company for a Carrier. I've yet to have any issues 5 years later. I mean, the damn things are all basically the same thing, you're just paying for a name. They warranty the major components.

Do contractors care of you ask them to buy a certain brand or if you can buy the unit? Of course they can tell you what you need.

Does anyone know anything about York HVACs?

Here's the answer for who has the best units currently on the market. In this order:

1)York (Johnson Controls)...currently BY FAR the best.
2)Rheem
3)Trane or Goodman
4)Everyone else sucks unless you're going with some high 18+ SEER/EER system. They all half-arse their low 14SEER equipment except for my top 3.

I manufacture HVAC equipment for all of the known brands. I am friends with all of the C-level officers in these companies. The company I work for was founded by the original person to ever put a/c in a residential home.

York (JCI products), including Luxaire and some others, are seriously over building their products right now. Rheem is also producing a high quality product especially their southwest models. Trane is a very good unit but they may fudge their SEER/EER ratings a little. Goodman was once junk but Daikin will have none of that if they're owning it. Goodman is now producing a very good unit.

I'd stay away from Lennox. Google the evaporator coil class action lawsuit. I have Lennox which is how I know. My coworker has the same issues.

American Standard is just a Trane with a different name tag on it. I'd certainly have no issue with one in my house.

considering the 16 seer is $1,000 more than the 14 seer 3 ton unit...in what possible universe is it worth the extra $1,000?

how many years of service would you need to get from a 3 ton unit to justify that?

Below is based on 2500 hours of yearly run time at 11.5 cents per KW.

13 SEER = $805.00

14 SEER = $747.50

15 SEER = $690.00

16 SEER = $632.50

23 SEER = $448.50

So, 8-9 years.

is that a bunch of hocus pocus? i'm curious as well as i'm considering replacing my aging unit thats 30 years old with something more modern.

With an older unit the condenser coils aren't Teflon treated and therefore attract humidity which then freezes and bogs down the unit. Basically you need to keep the humidity level down around the unit. One good trick I've found is to cover the unit with a tarp on especially humid days for maximum cooling

I do commercial HVAC and personally wouldn't buy anything other than a Carrier for my house. That said, any of the big 4 (Carrier, Trane, Lennox & York) should give you many years of good service. I also come in contact with plenty of Rheem, Bryant, and Goodman units that are ten plus years old and working fine but they are a step down in workmanship compared to the big four.

what are the prices of those big 4? i can pick up a 3 ton all-in-one goodman for $2200. are we talking double the price? i can't justify that if the goodman is going to last 10+ years.

Thanks for the breakdown good info. One question are Rheem and Ruud still basically the same thing? Made in the same factory? Im getting close to replacement and when I ask hvac guys they seem to recommend Rheem or Rudd a lot.

I'm glad Goodman is getting some love. My current system is two goodmans, one upstairs one downstairs, they are going on 20 years of service and I have had almost no problems with either unit. Supposedly my goodmans are from when the company was crap but I haven't had issues. If Goodman has improved I will be considering Goodman again based on my experience.
