Stumbled on this lady's blog looking for some gardening information. Wow! This couple is the definition of adventurous. She's posting about their off-gridding project in Mexico. Stuff like this fascinates me to no end.

quote:

I had mentioned a few weeks ago that we were reviving a bungalow in Baja. We managed to acquire a parcel with nothing more than a surf shack, an outdoor kitchen, and a fire pit on it, and had spent most of December fixing up our flat. It’s still very much a work in progress, especially since we’re aiming to reuse and repurpose as much as possible, but I thought it would be fun to bring you along on our off-grid journey as we begin to make a home in Mexico.

Last March, we started driving down to a little surf spot about four hours south of the California border. Within a couple hours of the border are tourist towns like Rosarito and Ensenada with highrise hotels and gated gringo communities, but drive another couple hours south and suddenly you’re in The Real Mexico. A place where English is scarce, where pesos are more common than dollars, and where most Americans are afraid to travel through.

Down at the Ranch, there’s no Internet. No television. No phone service. Not even a source of power (until we eventually rig up a solar panel, anyway). It’s basically just glorified camping, but when we’re at the Ranch, we feel at home. It doesn’t matter that our home is miles from a major road, or that the town on that major road is only a mile wide.

But she seems annoying. Anybody who spends that much time on a blog about themself is annoying.

You don't need a tremendous amount of capital to do such things, just a willingness to work and not care about what others might think.

Then again, having financial security allows one to take these kinds of risks without too much worry.

exactly
I'm off grid at my place in Texas with the exception of diesel for the truck and propane for the stove. When I retire there in a few years I will have very little need for money, the biggest need being health insurance

I'll have no bills other than blue cross

I'm semi off-grid at my place in the country.

What caught my attention about this young woman is - she has some amazing gardening skills for someone that age.

Is it really off grid if you post a story and 100 pictures of it on your blog?

She posted an interesting article "Getting Stoned on Soil" LOL

quote:

Studies have shown that a bacterium in the earth, Mycobacterium vaccae, works like an antidepressant by releasing serotonin (the natural “happy drug”) in your brain, much in the same way that Prozac works. The mind-altering (but harmless) bacterium has been found to boost levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in both mice and humans. By simply taking a walk in the woods or digging in the dirt, you can dose yourself with nature’s happy pill just by breathing in the smell of clean earth. “High on life” has a totally new meaning now.

Damn, we need more women like this around.

Not quite as adventurous as donning a tin foil hat and denying someone modern medicine

I was coming to post the same thing. Keeping the entire internet up to date with you happenings its basically the opposite of being "off the grid".
