The Atlantic got off to a fast start and is already up to 4 named systems, including one hurricane. Those systems have generated an astounding 5 ACE! (Ivan 2004 generated 70 ACE) However, the Pacific has been abnormally calm until this week but things are going off for sure now.

and the EPAC looks to stay active

Blas is making a run at Cat 5 but has nothing on Nepartak

Seems like for the last several years that the Atlantic has been quiet. I guess the El Nino/Nina effect is the cause of that, has this effect weakened?

There is a lot at play but there are signs that the Atlantic is transitioning from an active period to a calmer period. Last season El Nino played a role but the seasons before were also on the calmer side.

Things are about to go down hill with the quickness in Taiwan but they are used to it. Nearly 20 Cat-4 & 5 landfalls since 1950.

Anyone got travel plans to Hawaii? It looks like Hurricane Darby could make a run at the Big Island. Regardless, the surf will be up with Celia passing to the north and then Darby inbound. It looks like the EPAC could break the record for July systems with the Euro showing storms 5 & 6 spinning up after Darby.

This is good for the Gulf, typically the Gulf is pretty calm when the EPAC is on fire like this.

And here is a pic of the atmosphere doing atmosphere things:
